I have done the other validation method below on the web site and run the http://www.microsoft.com/genuine/diag/ also which complete successfully

    Validate Now

Validate now to make sure you are getting all the benefits of genuine Windows

All of these complete properly but when I go back and try to download the file at the top of this post or any other requiring windows validation I always get the same message of a unknown error encountered during windows validation.

  • I've finally found a solution to this, and it's classic. I went to the Micorsoft download page using Google Chrome instead of Internet Explorer. I ended up being prompted to run a file called GenuineCheck.exe, then the validation and the download ran just fine. Maybe there was some tweak in IE settings that would have made it work there, but I had IE security settings all set to default.

Go figure that I had to run Google's browser to get a Microsoft download...!

  • Hello, JohnnyLindow

I do not see any reason why it would fail the validation. I recommend contacting assisted support at one of the below URLs for additional assistance.

  • Can you tell me if you've gotten a resolution to this? I'm having the same problem. I've had to install a new drive on my Gateway machine & install Vista from the Operating System disk. I activated Windows with no problem, and everything else is working fine. However, any time I try to download something from Microsoft and click Continue to validate windows, it fails with the error given above. Clicking Validate Now on the error page always works, but never takes me to the download. As with the original poster, I was able to run the validation diagnostic (http://www.microsoft.com/genuine/diag/) and it discovered no problems. PLEASE HELP.

  • shelbysmom is right.  after dozens of restarts trying to download a KB patch with IE, passing validation, but then receiving an "unable to detect validation status" message, I used Safari to download the patch (and validate Vista).  Worked like a charm the first time.
