You may not have correctly configured your firewall for FTP access to your server. Why do you want an FTP server on your WHS computer? It's not supported, potentially it's a violation of the EULA (there is a restriction in the EULA against adding roles to your server), and the Remote Access web site provides a much easier-to-use interface for most purposes.
I'm not on the WHS team, I just post a lot. :)- Proposed as answer by kariya21Moderator Saturday, December 13, 2008 3:53 AM

To add...
Why allow access to your WHS via FTP which is inherently insecure. WHS has a nice Secure Socket Layer [SSL] remote access scheme to shared files and folders built-in.

WHS also gives you, the administrator, the ability to configure which shared folders your remote users have access to AND whether or not they have read or read/write permissions in those folders. Its highly configurable in that way.
I personally see no reason whatsoever to add FTP access to the WHS.

I agree with the other comments about FTP being not a recommended and unsecure solution.
If you find the web interface of WHS too inconvenient for your purposes, you could try the add-in Web Folders 4 WHS.
