MCSA/MCSE 2012 to 2016 question RRS feed

  • Question

  • If I take the 70-744 Securing Windows Server 2016 to upgrade my MCSE to 2016, does that automatically update my MCSA Operating System certification from Server 2012 to Server 2016 as well or would I need to take the 70-743 exam too?

  • No it wouldn't.

Server 2012 and Server 2016 certifications are independent and separate and unlike the Operating Systems themselves they don't get Upgraded from one to the other.

If you have an MCSA in 2008 or 2012, these count as "credits" towards studying your MCSA 2016 certifications and after you pass your "Upgrade" exam [which upgrades YOU not your certifications] , you will still be certified to MCSA level in 2008 or 2012 as well.

If you then go on to 2016 MCSE, you will still only have MCSA in 08/12 as you would not have passed the subjects which test on technologies unique to MCSE 08/12 ... you would not be certified to MCSE level in 08/12.

You can still sit the required exams to take you up to MCSE 2012 if you would like (while they are still available - google for exam retirement dates).
