My latest download of Windows XP updates has installed a WGA Installation Wizard on my machine. Everytime I boot my system, it requests I install WGA.
How can I remove the WGA Installation Wizard and prevent it from being installed again on my next update?
The forum thread titled "Get Rid of WGA Noftications Install Wizard Upon Start Up" has two replies, both of which appear to be an alternate way of running WGA.
Let me be clear... I don't want another way of running WGA. I need to REMOVE the undesired WGA Installation Wizard.
My WGA experience over the last few years with authorized DELL computers has been a time consuming nightmare and I don't want to go through it again.

Morning David,
Please follow the steps outlined below as it could either resolve your issue or, if need be, provide us with additional information to determine the cause of this issue.1. Ensure you log onto the computer experiencing the issue with “Administrator” rights.
2. Next we would like to confirm that you are running the most current version of the Genuine Advantage control on your computer. In order to do this please follow the below link and choose the “Validate Office” option.

If the above steps did not resolve your issue lets continue with the steps below.
If you could also please follow the steps outlined below, the diagnostics Web Site will attempt to resolve the validation errors you are experiencing with Office.

Next follow the on-screen prompts to resolve the issue if any of the checks at the above site fail. If, after attempting to resolve the issue as per the instructions on the above site fails, please refer to the link below and run the MGA Diagnostics tool:

You will be prompted to either “Run” or “Save” the tool. Choose to “Run” the tool and follow the on-screen prompts. You will receive an “Internet Explorer-Security Warning” dialog box for the “Windows Genuine Advantage Diagnostic Tool”; you must choose to “Run” this tool when prompted.
Once you are presented with the Diagnostics tool choose “Continue” to run the diagnostic report. If the “RESOLVE” button is available after running the diagnostics, please click “RESOLVE” to allow the diagnostic tool to attempt a repair.
1. After running the MGA Diagnostic tool, click on the “Windows” tab and then click on “Copy”.
2. Please return to this post and “Paste” the results here for additional review.
Step 2 is to look on the computer itself, in the documentation you received with the computer or with your retail purchase of Windows to see if you have a Certificate of Authenticity (COA). If you have one, tell us about the COA. Tell us:
1. What edition of Windows XP is it for, Home, Pro, or Media Center, or another version of Windows?
2. Does it read "OEM Software" or "OEM Product" in black lettering?
3. Or, does it have the computer manufacturer's name in black lettering?
4. DO NOT post the Product Key.

David, I am having the same problem and I think it's not the first time either. I'm going to opt to hide the update by running updates through the web page so I can select the "do not show this again" option.
I get frustrated when someone wrtites a tool that does not work but also causes unnecessary disruption to the end users.Monday, May 4, 2009 8:05 AM -

1. Stop the Automatic Updates service:
Start > Run > (type in) services.msc > [OK]
Double-click Automatic Updates > Click on Stop
(Stopping the service will take a moment)
2. Delete the contents of the Download folder:
Start > Run > (type in) %windir%\SoftwareDistribution > [OK]
Open the Download folder and delete its contents
Close the window.
3. Go to Windows Update website (update.microsoft.com) must be in Microsoft explorer 5 or higher)| Select CUSTOM and allow the scan to
complete | Uncheck/deselect KB905474 and hide it ("Don't show me this update
again").
4. Start the Automatic Updates service:
Start > Run > (type in) services.msc > [OK]
Double-click Automatic Updates > Click on Start
(Starting the service will take a moment)
Tip: Change your Automatic Updates setting from "Download but notify" to
"Notify only."

Really, Stephen. Why post at all if you're going to be unhelpful? This is the second time this problem has been posted (and phrased in this manner) and you have posted your "answer". For me, at least, the KB905474 folder was not located in %windir%\SoftwareDistribution\ but in %windir%\System32\. It is the folder from which the installer runs, and it is the folder you want to remove. Unless you prefer to update manually, I would not recommend disabling automatic updates entirely. Security updates are important. Instead what you should do is set automatic updates to prompt you before downloading and if/when you see the windows genuine advantage installer in the list, uncheck it.Thursday, December 10, 2009 4:17 AM

I'm having the same problem. Every time I logon with the Admin account I get the WGA prompt.
I went to the Microsoft Genuine portal and it passed fine but did not resolve the issue.
I ran the diag tool and it passed fine.
