  • Everyone who had Windows Explorer crash because of the ShellExtension installed by ICE 2.0.2: We've fixed this problem in the latest update (ICE version 2.0.3), along with several other minor issues.

Please download the latest version from the ICE home page: http://research.microsoft.com/en-us/um/redmond/projects/ice/

Thanks for helping us track down the problem!

  • Thanks for reporting this. This isn't a bug in the main ICE program, but in the way that we extended the explorer right click menu to allow launching ICE from a selection of images. This seems to only happen on Win7, so we'll have to debug there.

Your work around of re-installing the previous version is what I would recommend until we fix this.

For advanced users - if you hit this issue, you can just disable the shell extension for now and continue using 2.0. You will need to launch an "elevated" command prompt and "unregister" the shell extension via regsvr32 (https://support.microsoft.com/kb/249873). Screen shot of the procedure here (note for 32 bit systems the ICE folder is in the different place than this screen shot).

  • I also experienced Explorer right-click crashes with ICE 2.02/Win7 x86.  Another way to unregister the shell ext. is with ShellExView; select CShellStitcher Object, disable (F7), restart Explorer (Ctrl-E), problem solved.  You can even report the issue so it is recorded on the SEV website (which I did).

There doesn't seem to be any problem on my Win 7 x64 computer.

  • After install, right-mouse-click application menu causes Windows Explorer failure.

After uninstall, right-mouse-click application menu works as expected.

  • Hello,

I have the same issue on my computer with Windows 7 (32 bits).

I tried to unregister ShellExtension.dll, but I had an error message (done with administrator grants): 0x080070005 error code launched by regsvr32.

When a fix will be available?

    Best regards,

    Stéphane

  • We have determined the problem in ICE's ShellExtension.dll that is causing the Explorer crash, and we have a fix for the bug. We'll be releasing an update that includes this fix and a few others... We don't have a date yet, but it should be soon.

  • After installing the new version of  Image Composition Editor
right clicks on files lead to a crash of Windows Explorer.

The culprit is "CShellStitcher Object" installed by   Image Composition Editor.

    ShellExView:

CShellStitcher Object Yes Context Menu Image Composite Editor Shell Extension 2.0.2.0 Image Composite Editor Microsoft Corporation No No No No No No C:\Program Files\Microsoft Research\Image Composite Editor\ShellExtension.dll {1AC77AE9-9EC6-405A-9F9B-C06AB3C10B71} 2015-02-04 14:57:30 2015-02-14 18:49:50 Yes * A 221.696 No

I am using Windows 7. Disabling CShellStitcher Object solves the issue.

Seems the handler is broken at least on my machine.

    Otherwise a great program.

  • I have been using ICE 1.4.4.0 for years with very happy results.  Recent ICE use prompted an upgrade to ICE 2.0.  I installed the upgrade and was very pleased with ICE 2.0 upgrades, but subsequently found Windows 7 Explorer would crash 100% of the time with mouse right-click selections.  Reverting to the previous ICE version eliminated the conflict.

Is this a known issue?  Is there a fix or work-around?

  • I am having the same problem.  How is CShellStitcher Object disabled?  What effect does this have on ICE 2.0?

  • Hello

I encountered that problem of Windows Explorer crash while doing a right click and after installation of ICE 2.0.2 on Windows 7 32 bit.

I made several install and uninstall operations to make sure that the problem was related to ICE installation. Also whent to the application events viewer to sniff around. I saw the crash of shell32.dll called by explorer.exe and thought of possible additions of ICE in the context menu.

I overcame the problem by comparing registry before and after installation and by deleting the following registry key :

    [HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\*\shellex\ContextMenuHandlers\{1AC77AE9-9EC6-405A-9F9B-C06AB3C10B71}]

I'm not telling that it is the best fix, but this is the way I could keep ICE installed without Explorer crash

    Thanks for your attention.
