Remove From My Forums

HELP! with Windows_OneCare_Evt file

I had to do a system restore a few days ago and it conflicted with my onecare anti virus program. The problem being that some of the files were deleted in error so I thought it would simply be the case of re-installing from the onecare website.

Unfortunately it re-installed to a point then stopped working. When I tried to re-install again I get an error message stating that as its already installed I cant reinstall until I deleted the version already installed. Anyway a few hours later and having tried all the tools on the onecare site I eventually retorted to switching to safe mode where I managed to delete every file bar this one "Windows_OneCare_Evt" This is in my systems 32 folder in conf. I cant delete it as it keeps saying its protected and it will not let me unprotect it. Any ideas?

The file that you are referring to is the OneCare Event Log, the service that is locking it down is the "Event Log Service".

I don't think that you can stop the Event Log Service, so I think the only way to remove it would be to use the cleanup utility like Steve suggests.

Worst comes to worse you could try booting into Safe Mode or even into Recovery Console and try to delete it from there, both of which you may want to get help from support as they are pretty advanced steps.
