CRM 4.0 upgrade RRS feed

  • Question

  • We are using CRM 4.0 in a single server environment.  We are looking to upgrade to version 2011.  We have had a lot of customizations done via scripts and SDK.  Will an inplace upgrade work given that we have these customizations?  Our current server is 64bit.  I was advised that the base code would upgrade but not the customizations and that the customizations will remain in 4.0 format with the upgrade unless we import them.  Is this correct?

    Thanks
    Len

  • You can read about solutions here: http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/gg334576.aspx, it is a new feature in CRM.

Your customizations will continue to work, but they will not be grouped into a solution that can be uninstalled/updated, until you convert them to a managed solution they will continue to work but you cannot take advantages of having your customizations in a solution...cannot take advantage of the solutions feautres described in the link above.

  • Hi Len,

You can do an "in-place" upgrade since you are already on a 64 bit server. Regarding customizations, all supported CRM4.0 customizations will be upgraded and will continue to work after you upgrade, however, they will not be in the form of a "solution" since that is a new concept in CRM 2011, but you can convert them to managed solutions later on.

You also mention you have customizations done via scripts, what do you mean scripts? (SQL scripts?) If they are unsupported customizations then they might break or they might fail upgrade...or if you're lucky everything will work, there is no way to know until you try because officially, they are not supported.

I recommend you read the implementation guide (http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/en/details.aspx?FamilyID=9886ab96-3571-420f-83ad-246899482fb4) which has all the details about upgrading to CRM 2011.

  • Hi Gonzalo,

Thanks for the reply. Forgive me if I dont understand this but what does your sentence mean when you say "all supported CRM 4.0 customizations will be upgraded and will continue to work after you upgrade, however, they will not be in the form of a "solution" since that is a new concept in CRM 2011".  I havent looked over that guide you sent me yet but am trying to get to it today.  What would be different between the customizations working and them not being a solutions.  I am just trying to understand.

    Thanks again,
    Len
