Auto-Enable Outlook CRM Toolbar RRS feed

  • Question

  • how can I get the CRM toolbar to automatically re-enable itself once I'm connected?  An example of this would be if I took my laptop off the network, the CRM toolbar will eventually lose its connection and disable itself (cleared out icons).  Once I come back to my desk and plug my laptop back into the network, I must now close outlook all together and launch it again to re-establish the CRM toolbar.

The system tray icon allows you to Disable CRM but is there a way to then Enable CRM if it has become disabled (without having to restart Outlook???) This is not ideal for users that are frequently leaving the network and forcing them to restart Outlook everytime they rejoin.

For an organization always on the go, this seems like it should have been built in. Anyone have an answer? Registry Edit? Add-on?

    Thanks,
    Dennis

  • You could install the Offline Client rather than the Desktop Client and train your users to use the Go Offline, Go Online button.  This should be a good solution to allow your Users to frequently leave and join the Network with minimal inconvenience.

  • Hi,

I don't have a good answer to re-load when disabled. But one thing you cold do is to do some registry settings to allow you computer loose connection in shorter time periods, without loosing CRM. I actually did these settings with a client today, and it worked as inteded.

There are several blogs that has described this, here is one:

    Regkey Name

    Default

    Description

ClientAuthNotificationThrottle 30000 Specifies the required elapsed time before which another balloon notification may be displayed (helps prevent too frequent balloon notifications).

    ClientAuthRenewPeriod

    60000

Specifies how frequently the hoster process will check if it should renew authentication.

    ClientAuthVerifyConnectionPeriod

    30000

Specifies how frequently the hoster process will check connectivity to the web application by downloading a tiny icon (anonymous access).

    ClientAuthVerifySignedInPeriod

    5000

Specifies how frequently the hoster process will check if authentication has been lost (ex: detect if cookies have been deleted or the CRM ticket has expired).

    ClientAuthAllowRetries

3 Specifies the number of failed authentication attempts (after this an error will be shown or the client will move to the offline state).

  • That certainly helps and we can play with those registry values, but will this have a business impact? ie: Is this ideal for users when the system is checking so infrequently to verify connection? So if someone rejoins the network but since the authentication is only happening every X seconds, will CRM know the person is back online?

  • Also....

If we were either max these numbers out or set them to zero so that it appears that the person is connected (when in fact they may not be), will this crash Outlook? Or will the system continue to try to "Track in CRM" and once it finally receives a response from the server, actually send that information across?

  • Donna,

Thanks for the reply.  We initially looked at implementing Off Line CRM but decided against it due to the memory usage and it was somewhat overkill for our organization.  Our goal would be to have CRM continuously try to ping the server at all times without being disabled.  This would at least ensure if someone were to rejoin the network, the CRM toolbar would come back to life.  It seems like there must be a way to tell the CRM toolbar to NEVER disable or to force it re-enable?

  • I have not tried the scenarios you describe; but since it's for the client; I would have tested it.

  • I proposed your answer as an answer but that was wrong, sorry.

I have noticed and I recommend internally that users take advantage of the quick log in and out options that come with the icon in the lower right corner of the screen(by the clock) there is a little CRM icon that you can click on to log in and out of Outlook. See screen dump:

I tell all my sales and marketing people that if the toolbar greys out upon loading the first log in by right clicking on the icon and log in. It works 95% of the time.

I have also noticed that most users will open both web and work in outlook <>CRM and because it shares session data it will log the user out of outlook after sometime. I usually suggest that if users want to have advance find open while working in outlook<>CRM then they should use the IN-private browsing options in IE.

That is my two cents :)
