Is USB Recovery Key Necessary? RRS feed

  • Question

  • Hello:

I read all the posts related to "USB Recovery Key" on this forum, and I still can't find a direct answer.

    (1) Does a USB Recovery Key really need to be created to do a bare-metal restore of a workstation?  "Home Server 2011 Unleashed" doesn't even mention the Restore CD that comes with the OEM package for WHS 2011 and insists that a USB Recovery key is required (that's not good for my computers that can't boot from USB).

    (2) Why would Microsoft include a CD called "Client Computer Restore" in their WHS 2011 software distribution package if a USB key is required?

    (3) I have read posts of people who did a bare metal restore using the CD with no mention of the USB Recovery key.

This is ambiguous.  Anybody have experience with this issue?

  • No, it's not required. It is just an alternative  to using the Client Restore CD, if for example you don't have an optical drive on your server.
