I was rebuilding a computer for a company, and i didnt have a copy of xp laying around. Had to do a total over haul of the systems hardware.
Anyway, I found a dell install cd. It only contained windows and no dell junk on it. It installed without needed a product key. After installation, i needed up activate, and nothing i have tried has worked. I tried a retail code, i called MS and purchased a new product key for 10$. Still didnt work.
I have no problem buying a new license oem, retail whatever, but it is too expensive for the company to afford paying me to sit there for 3 hrs to do it.
How can i activate it?
I called DELL, they were spilling all sorts of nonsense about needed express tag codes before they can breath in my direction. They said if i buy a code from them i need to reinstall.
Microsoft, please help.... XP is old, has these pesky activation issues. I had no media that came with that computer as it was made by some company that makes custom desktops, and it has no branding. It came with legit OS on it. I have no CD, no COA, nothing. Willing to pay the 89$ for a new license, but not a reinstall.
The product code masked there is not any of the 2 codes i tried. the first being a DELL OEM code, the second a MS provided Retail Code which i paid for.
here is the data from MGA Tool

You cannot use a Dell Windows XP Reinstallation CD on a non-Dell computer. You'll need to purchase a conventional "Full Version" of Windows XP and perform a "clean install".Please note: I am not a Microsoft employee...only a voluntary forum contributor.

ok, so i noticed that the product key was different than the one i got from microsoft.
When i try to activate and i click Change Product Key, it still wouldnt work, and i had to call, and go through the MS help loop again which never ends up working with the huge number you have to enter on the phone or give to an agent.
SO i found on MS site the Product key updater. I ran it. Put in my new key. Ran, the MGA again, the new key was there, and it was recognized as Validation diagnostics installer not installed (i think that is what it said).
Then i clicked resolve, it took my to the validation site, i ran the axtive x validater, and i am not valid.
Is this temporary? Will it hickup in the future? Can i put my stamp that the system is fixed to the office i did this for? It says in Green, GENUINE.
Since i used the dell cd origionally, do i still need to be concerned? or since i am now valid, im permanently valid with this hardware profile?
Any confirmations or concerns will be most generous.

Carey was correct regards to using a Dell disc. Your question is out of scope for the WGA forums relating to Windows Product Activation. I will pass along these links:
It is recommended that you uninstall the Dell version installed on a non Dell computer, and that you install a conventional "Full Version" immediately to avoid potential problems you may have in the future.
