DEP Issues RRS feed

  • Question

  • I run Windows Vista Home Premium. I have problems with DEP shutting down SharedView. I saw in the release notes that I needed to update Adobe flash, but this doesn't help with the DEP problem. Therefore, I want to disable DEP for SharedView, but I can't.

I understand DEP and how to configure it, but why can't I turn it off just for SharedView? I went to 'System Properties' > 'Performance Options' > 'Data Execution Prevention' and selected "Turn on DEP for all programs and services except those I select:" but when I click "Add" and select "SharedView.exe" I get a message saying "This program must run with data execution prevention (DAP) enabled. You cannot turn off DEP for this program." Why is that the case?

SharedView runs perfectly in a Win XP Pro virtual environment on my Vista machine, but not in Vista itself. Please help.

  • Hello SMS,

It sounds as if perhaps that when the Flash plugin was updated that for some reason it was only updated for the Firefox web browser and not also for the Internet Explorer browser.  I'm not sure how Adobe created their installer so I don't have an explanation at the moment.  I'm glad that SharedView is working well for you now.  Thanks.

  • Hello SMS,

After upgrading to the latest version of Flash you are still encountering the issue where DEP causes SharedView to close?  Have you noticed a pattern as to when it closes SharedView?  Thanks.

  • Yes, I am still encountering the same issue after upgrading to the latest version of Flash.

As for when DEP closes the program, it happens at the same point every time. After I sign in with my Live ID, and after I click past the point where I can invite other participants, DEP closes the program as it attempts to create/join a session. When I run SharedView in XP there is a flash advertisement banner at this point, so it leads me to assume that it is this flash banner that is giving me fits.

But my original question was why I just can't disable DEP for SharedView altogether. Please offer me an answer concerning that question (unless you can think of another fix for this problem).

    Thanks.

  • Hello SMS,

Could you please let us know which version of Flash you are using?  Also, could you provide your SharedView client log file contents?  It can be found by going to Start > Run > type "%temp%" and press Enter > look for the most recent file named like SharedView-debug.txt.

Here is a link from the Adobe web site regarding the issue with older versions of Flash - http://kb.adobe.com/selfservice/viewContent.do?externalId=kb401159 .

The reason that DEP cannot be disabled for SharedView is that the “NXCOMPAT”(Compatible with DEP) flag is set when we build/create the SharedView executable.  Here is some background information about DEP if you are interested - http://windowshelp.microsoft.com/Windows/en-US/Help/80062dee-6203-42f8-b898-cfb79bde98891033.mspx .  Thanks.

  • I have version 9,0,47,0 of Adobe Flash installed.

Is there any way to change the NXCOMPAT flag for SharedView so that DEP can be disabled for it? Thanks for taking the time to help me.

My latest SharedView client log can be found below:

  • Hello SMS,

Do you happen to know what your DEP setting is currently (can be found in System > Advanced System Settings > Performance > DEP tab)?  I have tried with the default setting, Vista Home Premium, and Flash 9.0.47.0 and am unable to reproduce this issue.  I also tried with setting DEP to be on for all progams except those chosen and could not reproduce the issue.  Are you able to share a link to a screenshot of the error that you receive when DEP closes SharedView?  You might also be able to capture the error message by using CTRL + A and CTRL + C on the error dialog.  Thanks.

  • First of all, thanks again for taking all this time in trying to help me. I really do appreciate it.

Ok, I have taken screenshots of all the information you have asked for and uploaded them to my domain.

My DEP settings can be seen here. (I've tried both settings myself.)

The process of trying to run SharedView and getting the DEP error message can be seen in the links below:

  • Hi SMS,

Do you know if you running any other IE add-ins or toolbars when you launch your IE web browser?  Also, when SharedView is closed by DEP do you send the problem report to Microsoft?  Thanks.

    Friday, July 20, 2007 7:57 PM
  • Here's a screenshot of my IE add-on list.

To answer your second question: no. I have error reporting turned off.
    Saturday, July 21, 2007 4:33 PM
  • We are actively investigating the issue that you are facing. We are currently unable to reproduce the problem you have in our lab and would like to ask you to turn on error reporting, reproduce the problem and send the report to Microsoft so we can take a look at the detailed stack trace. You can then turn off error reporting again if you dont want to change that for the long term.

Please let us know when you do that and thank you for using MS SharedView Beta!

  • Ok, here's a strange one for you to think about...

Out of frustration, I took a closer look at the version of Adobe Flash I was running on my computer. Using Vista's search, I found a folder and navigated to it at C:\Windows\System32\Macromed\Flash. In that folder there were a number of .exe files, one of which had the word "update" or something that indicated to me that it was some kind of updater. (I don't remember the exact file name because I didn't expect what I was doing to make any difference.) In any case, double-clicking that launched a little window that updated Adobe Flash, and ever since then SharedView works on Vista.

I don't fully understand what happened, but I have an idea. When you asked me before to check what version of Adobe I had I checked the plugin that I had installed for Mozilla Firefox, and it was the newest version. I also went to the download page for the latest version of Flash suggested by the ShardewView release notes, but once again I did it in Firefox. Is it possible that somehow the Flash software that SharedVuew uses didn't get updated because I was using Firefox and not IE to update it?

I'll let you tech folks figure this all out. But for the moment it appears as though whatever update I managed to do by using the method above was good enough for SharedView to work in Vista.

    Thoughts?

    Thanks again.
