Windows Vista Home Premium - Product Key Validation Problem

Question
-
I bought a Medion Laptop at Aldi's that had Windows Vista Home Premium already installed on it to go to university. It has been working fine untill a week ago it asked me to validate my windows vista home premium product key, which I found on a sticker on the base of my laptop. After entering this key I was notified in the bottom right corner of my screen that the product I was using was not a genuine windows product, I restarted my laptop and it restarted fine with no notice of not having a genuine windows product.
However, last night, upon signing in it asked me to re-enter my product key again, so I did, only to be notified that it was an invalid key. Again, restarting my laptop I was presented with the same problem only at the top was a heading saying that my product key was already in use...
I need my laptop for uni as all my files are stored on here and I was in the process of backing it all up to CD but had not finished. I need this data urgently so I cannot have the memory wiped.
My diagnostic report is as follows...

Hello Tanya,
Thank you for visiting the Genuine Advantage forum. Your issue is related to Windows Product Activation. In an attempt to assist I would like to provide some information which may or may not help.
From the Desktop:
a) If you have access to the Start button: Click the Start button, and type in "slui.exe 4" in the search field and then press the "Enter" key. This will bring up the Activate by Phone dialog window. Follow the steps provided by the window. The phone activation process should only take about 6 minutes.
b) If you do not have access to the Start button: Reboot and login to Vista, a dialog window will come up. In that window, click the option "Access computer with reduced functionality". Once you do that, Internet Explorer or Firefox browser will open. In the address bar type "c:\windows\system32\cmd.exe" press enter, a new window will come up, type: slui 4 and hit enter and follow steps to Activate over the Phone. Also you may reference the following site for various Telephone Activation Centers:
