Windows 1607 - Anniversary Release broke Win 10 Update WHS 2011 RRS feed

  • Question

  • I had updated a Windows 10 machine with the UEFI hotfix. Everything worked fine after that; backups, restores etc.

I installed the anniversary update (Windows 1607, don't remember the build) and now backup fails every time it tries to run.

Anyone from Microsoft looking at this? I've been using WHS 2011 for 3 years now. The backup/recover part was the single most useful part. I was backing up a couple of Win 7 and one Win10 client.

If this doesn't get fixed, I'll have to abandon WHS 2011 and go to a Linux home server/backup solution.

UPDATE: I've re-installed the connector on the client machine same result; the backup starts and after a couple of minutes fails.
Also, the Dashboard will not run on the client. You click to run it, enter your password, spends a minute trying to connect/start and then just exits. The server is up and running and i can remote desktop into it.

  • Hi,

According to your description, my understanding is that WHS 2011 failed to back up Windows 10 after installing the anniversary update.

On the problematic Windows 10 client, run “services.msc” to Services, check Windows Server related service, try to manually restart them and check the result.

Besides, is there any error message prompted when failed to back up Windows 10.

Check Event Viewer if any event has been logged. Also, Check the log files which are located at %\ProgramData%\Microsoft\Windows Server\Logs on both WHS and client sides.

  • Backup may fail for various reasons. One could be the fact, that the updated creates a copy of the old OS folders on the same drive and therfor free disk space gets exhausted to a point, that a volume snapshot is no longer possible.

Just for this post I enforced the update to build 1607 to my home PC, which is connected with Windows Home Server 2011 and did not automatically receive the patch yet by installing the update from an external media.

After that I faced some issues with network connectivity (may be something between Windows, network card drivers and ESET Endpoint security. While I was still troubleshooting, it started to work again.)

Windows Home Server Connector never ceased to work properly with existing connectivity, Dashboard works and backup could be launched and completed successfully too.

For your issues I would recommend to check the event log for more detailed error messages, since those would allow better support.

    Also you can try to:

    • check free disk space (should be more than 10% on each backed up volume including the hidden one)
    • eventually configure backup to exclude the first drive
    • run chkdsk /f from an administrative cmd prompt against the volume, on which backup fails

    Regarding the dashboard:

    • Can you connect via Remote Desktop client to your server? (user name: YourServer\Administrator, password the dashboard password)
    • Does the dashboard launch from there?
    • Is the network set to private network, and does no 3rd party security software interfer with the communication?

If there are indeed connectivity issues you can try to disable TCP/IP v6 on the clients network connection properties.

  • I had exactly this issue after the anniversary update too. I kinda dismissed your recommendation to check the Windows Server related services, but out of thoroughness went and looked and that was the problem. No idea why these services weren't running when they're set to automatic. Maybe ONE more restart would have been the one that let them start on their own?

I'll have to remember to check that they're still running when I next restart the PC.

    Regards,
    Drake

  • Hi,

    @ MandrakeNZ
Thank you for taking the time to have the update and share your experience about this problem.

    >No idea why these services weren't running when they're set to automatic.
You may try to disable 3rd party automatically startup items, this would be helpful to confirm that - if they have effect on WHS services’ startup.

    @ X1234x
You may post a new thread on this forum, provide details about the problem you have met.

And we will try to helpful you to narrow down the problem separately.

  • Thanks to everyone for the suggestions, I will try to double check on all the appropriate server 'services' being started or running.

    Thanks again. . .cma

  • Just wanted to add this. I have one of my computers running Win10 as an Insider receiving the frequent builds for the last year or so. After every update, reboot and coming back to the desktop of the client there were errors with Launchpad and such. What I found out is that even after it rebooted several times during these updates it still needed one more reboot after coming back to the desktop on client. When I did that all the errors, problems connecting to WHS 2011 went away. All back ups and restores work, that is what I was working for.

  • I have the same problem mentioned in this thread. I did apply the hotfix to server and checked the service is running on the server - it is.

On one pc I did the update to the anniversary edition and everything is fine. However on a second pc when I did the update I was able to use the connector to connect to the WHS server but I tried the  back up it failed right away. When I looked in the error log it told me the client server back up service failed. I tried to restart it but it kept on failing. When I went to the event viewer I saw multiple .net errors. I have reverted back to the non-anniversary edition  but I am wondering if I can find a way to solve this problem. I tried uninstalling and reinstalling the connector but that was a problem as it did the usual fail at 95% and closed - again a host of .net errors in the event viewer. Something may be going on with my .Net framework but I am really surte how to fix this in windows 10

I had the same problem of the Dashboard not working. I switched to another user account on the same computer and it started working on the new user account. Also open Services and check to see if "Windows Server Client Computer Backup Provider Service" has started. If not start it up and any other Windows Server entry's in Services and then check again. Also you can read this posting and see if it helps.

  • I had the problem on a Windows 10 machine for a very long time. Would always show, from the WHS2011 Dashboard on another computer, as offline. Could not access the Dashboard features from that Windows 10 computer not get any alerts. Confused me because the same Windows 10 client was connected to the WHS2011 as a file server with mapped drives.

Took me 8 months to solve it coming back to it now and again several hours each time until frustration led me away. Figured it out tonight.

Some of the Windows Server services, though set to "automatic", were not turned on on the Win10 client. Manually started the services and two things happened: could connect the Dashboard AND a backup started for the first time in 8 months!

  • Update: I've checked all the windows server services they're all set to run autmatically and all were running save one. Windows Server Initialization Servce was set on automatic, not running.

Started it up, ran a backup, still fails. I've looked at the Event Viewer, but frankly for a regular user, it's a worthless exercise, because we normally 1) don't really understand what it's telling us and 2) can't tell what we need to tweak even if we do understand.

Case in point (unrelated issue to this one) , I have an ongoing error message on the dash board that says the cleanup service failed to run (if you google around you will find it). Did some research, went to the event viewer and with research determined there was an issue with the backup folder being compressed. I uncompressed the entire backup folder no effect.

So, thanks to all for their input. Just don't have the energy or time to make an abandoned product continue to work. Will be transisitiong off of WHS2011 soon. Too bad they just did not sell it to someone else, but of course that would cut into their regular Windows Server sales.
