Cannot activate windows Keeps taking me back to logon screen

Question
-
I have just upgraded a laptop from XP Home to XP Pro... clean install!
Went through the process installed put in a genuine windows license key (bought it from Tiger Direct). When it boots for first time it says I can not log-in with activating first, so I do... It then says my copy of windows is activated. SO... I get to the welcome screen and try to login and it comes up that my copy of windows must be activated with Microsoft before I can log on. Do I want to activate windows now. If I say yes I go through the process and it tells me I am already activated and the does it again and again etc... If I say no it just takes me to logon and go in circles again.
SO... no matter what I do I can not logon... so no Internet... no being able to look at properties or validate, or control panel NOTHING it stays at the logon!
WHat can I do here... I have reformatted 3 times.... It is an Acer 1640 laptop!

Ok here is a possible solution. I went through the same problem and eventually got it resolved.
Here is what you need.
1. Windows media center Installation CD
2. Windows XP service pack 3 http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?FamilyId=5B33B5A8-5E76-401F-BE08-1E1555D4F3D4&displaylang=en
Here is what you do - Boot into the safe mode and extract "wpa.db_" file from your Media center installation CD and copy it on to c:\windows\system32 (assuming you have windows installed on C: ) and the full file name when it is extracted, it reads wpa.dbl. once that is done restart your PC and and boot into the safe mode again and install SP3. When thats done, boot into windows normally and activate your windows over the internet or by phone.
Ps. If you are prompted to activate in the safemode and you can't login. you can boot into windows console with your cd and extract the wpa.dbl file to c:\windows\system32, this will allow you to boot into safemode without the activation prompt.

Kevinc400,
Some users, when they try to bring up the Product Activation window, the window either doesn't come up, comes up but displays a Fault Error, comes up but the window is blank or they can't get to a point to bring up the window due to the Looping bug.
If you are experiencing any of these issues, please see this post for a possible fix for your issue: http://forums.microsoft.com/Genuine/ShowPost.aspx?PostID=1322791&SiteID=25

Kevinc400,
If you are receiving the error "...the number of times you can activate Windows with this product key has been exceeded" while trying to Activation over the Internet, please see the below information:
You are permitted to reinstall and activate XP as many times as you want to, as long as your use of XP maintains compliance with the End User Licensing Agreement (EULA). After a certain number of activations within a certain time period, automatic online activation will be suspended (This will also happen the first time you re-install and activate some OEM versions of Windows XP), which will require that you do a Telephone Activation. To do so, rerun the Activate Windows Wizard and select "Activate my product using the telephone". Follow the phone prompts.
If the automated telephone activation is not accepted, you will be offered the option to speak with a live activation representative. Choose that option. The rep will ask a few questions for the purpose of confirming that you are still using your license for XP in accordance with the EULA. If this is confirmed, the rep will issue an activation code for you to enter into the Activation Wizard.
You will need to log onto the internet for this, but there is more information about Activation and registration
of a Microsoft product here at http://support.microsoft.com/kb/326851/en-us
I hope this has helped!

No... I am getting the message that "This copy of WIndows XP must be activated before you can log on" Then I click activate and it takes me to an activation screen i go through the process and it says that my copy of windows has already been activated..... So I get back to the log on screen and it says the same thing again.... and again and again.
I have also un-installed and re-installed windows with a full format and clean install 3 times... same problem.
Have tried booting into safe mode.... same problem.
Can't get past it.

Kevinc400,
Please read this hotfix article as this may be another reason why you are having activation issues:

I am in the same boat as kevin! I log on.... it says i need to activate windows, so i click ok. then it tells me its already activated. so i click ok again! It brings me back to the logon screen, and here we go again same thing over and over and over. I called Microsoft and they told me it was a technical problem and that it would cost 70 bucks for some guy to fix it! So i hung up on him! What do i do! ive tried everything, Oh and dont tell me to go into safe mode, because its the same thing!Saturday, November 21, 2009 3:10 AM
