Are you using Avast! for anti-virus?
If so, then I would recommend uninstalling it, then updating your PC to Service Pack 2 using Windows Updates, then reinstalling Avast (or your other chosen AV).

Either an unauthorized change was made to Windows files or a software program that is installed on this computer is currently not compatible with Windows Vista.  Like Noel Suggested that it could be that Avast AV Program. Try uninstalling the same.

After you update or uninstall potentially incompatible software (Avast), validate Windows again. Visit http://ga.microsoft.com , and then click Validate Windows .

For the latest information on compatibility issues that include troubleshooting steps and a full list of applications that may cause this issue, visit the following Web site:

If there are no known issues with the software already installed on your computer, you may have to remove any recently installed software (including Microsoft Updates) to resolve the problem.

    To uninstall programs:

    1. Click the Start button.
    2. Click Control Panel , click Programs , and then click Programs and Features
    3. Select a program, and then click Uninstall

Hope this helps. Do past a copy of the diagonistic results once you try the above steps.
