Registry recovery

  My system is blanking out when im trying to instal windows service pack 2 xp home ed.   It gets half way through the instalation then restarts saying your system has recovered from a serious error ,   one or more of the registry files had to be recovered by use of log or alternate copy,   the recovery was successful ,   but when i re-instal exactly the same thing happens .   I have tried system restore and self help but i am going in circles .   please could some one help ?
