Windows 7 Ultimate, full retail edition activation problem RRS feed

  • Question

  • I have bought Windows 7 Ultimate and when came to activate, it comes up with the key has been blocked by Microsoft.

Both disks have the full hologram as in the ones shown on the site, the card with the product key sticker on looks real and theres a COA label on the top of the plastic box that holds the disks and key etc.   The markings on the hologram on the bottom of the DVD says the word "SECURE" and the one on the top of the box says "OUR PASSION" - I noticed though, that the foil with "OUR PASSION" on is a strip under the label that can be seen through the holes that is sticky - is this right?

A sticker on the outside of the wrapping says Ingram Micro as the vendor, GLC-0C181 "WIN ULT 7 ENGLISH ROW DVD"

I bought this sealed off ebay (yes i know im a mug, but thinking being boxed and sealed I couldnt go wrong) - if it is counterfeit (albeit a very good counterfeit), what are my rights ? The seller has a feedback of 100 and is a private seller by looks of it, though has sold 4 of the same item.

Some help would be great if you can help me :)

  • An update for anyone who has the same problem, I have received my full refund via Paypal - seller was quick to accept the item back and ask me not to use the new key emailed over to me :)

My advice to anyone, is the second you realise its not genuine, log it as a item significantly different claim and put as much detail as possible as it will help if Paypal have to get involved.

Reported it via the Microsoft Piracy form too, but heard nothing back. Chocolate fireguard comes to mind.

  • The PID with the number -066- is consistant with the other blocked MSDN keys, it appears someone, possibly the seller packaged an MSDN key with what looks on first appearance like legitmate media and packaging. File a claim with paypal and ebay and have them arbitrate this.

  • Hello firemonkey,

    Sorry for the wait.

The Product Key, currently being used in your copy of Windows 7, is a Blocked key that orginated from an MSDN (Microsoft Developer Network) Subscription.

My Tool doesn't give me many details, but my assumption is that either the account, that this key is from, was broken into and it's keys stolen or the owner of the account is selling the keys (which is against the Licensing Terms for MSDN Subscriptions).

If at all possible, I recommend contacting the person or company that sold you this key/software (or who sold you the computer that had this software was installed in) and arrange to return the software (or computer) for a full refund.

Very sorry for the bad news,

  • When purchasing a Microsoft Windows license, only purchase it from a trustworthy, reliable source, such as theMicrosoft Store. An eBay seller is not considered a "trustworthy, reliable source" for genuine software.  Contact the eBay seller and demand a 100% refund and report the rascal topiracy@microsoft.com .

  • If Darin is reading this, could you please check my key for me - so I have some definate info to goto a Paypal Dispute with.

Has anyone had any luck with a Paypal dispute for a possible counterfeit version?

The seller has sent me another key via email to use to activate it, however I dont want to have an illegal piece of software as it wasnt cheap.

Darin always reads these posts and always responds. He may or may not respond this afternoon, if he doesn't he will respond next week. If the sellers first key was bad then you can almost be certain the other will fail eventually. My suggestion is do not accept or use the second key and file a complaint with paypal today, you will have time to submit additional information after Darin responds with a difinitive answer. If it was me, I would not stress the piracy or legality issue, I would simply state, "I bought the product, it does not work and I want my money back". But then I am not a lawyer and have never played one on T.V. (stupid American T.V. reference).

  • Thanks for that. I have started the complaint with Paypal, so will have to see how it goes.  I guess its probably another good disk and box etc with an MSDN key - though its all very convincing. I've also reported it using the report piracy form.
