non-genuine Windows 7 message RRS feed

  • Question

  • Several months ago my desktop died that had been running a genuine copy of Windows 7. At that time I installed the copy of Windows 7 onto another desktop I had, and tossed the original desktop. I had no problems for months, until a couple of weeks ago I received the message that the copy is not genuine. Am I not allowed to move Windows 7 from a  dead computer to a backup computer (both the old and new PCs are Dells)? I ran the diagnostics and have the following report data:

  • Q.  Am I not allowed to move Windows 7 from a  dead computer to a backup computer (both the old and new PCs are Dells)?

    A.  No.  The Dell OEM SLP license is permanently tied to the original Dell PC it came with.  The license cannot be transferred to a different computer (Dell or otherwise).

  • OEM Licenses are locked to the machine on which they are first installed.

This machine came shipped with Vista installed - and is licensed for that OS, and not for Windows 7 (Check the COA sticker on the case)

You will need either to reformat and reinstall Vista, or purchase a valid license for Windows 7
