Why is Office GA specific to an OS ? RRS feed

  • Question

  • I work for a 3000 person group in France with Office 2003 mainly on PCs with Windows XP Pro.

I have a ThinkPad with Vista Pro on which Office 2003 was installed with the same CD & legal key as all the other persons in our group.   Office Genuine Advantage has no problems with Office 2003 on XP on all the other PCs & notebooks but considers mine with Vista Pro to be illégal.   Since when are Office licences specific to an OS ?

The Genuine Advantage Diagnostic tool says everything is OK, and the Vista Pro validates without problem.   As always these anti-piracy mesures, which I don’t condemn in principal, frequently pose problems to legitimate users!   Our computer dept is convinced they have a legal CD & key and nobody wants to upgrade to Office 2007 just to be legal, it is too much hassle for very little benefit.   So what are we supposed to do?

    Many thanks for your help

  • Hello le Gallois,

Here is a snippet of your mgadiag report:

Your installation of Office 2003 Pro on your IBM/Lenovo computer is a widely pirated Volume Licensing installation that was done with a widely pirated Volume Licensing Key that is now blocked from further use.

Volume Licensing editions of Office such as your installation of Office 2003 Professional, are not to be sold to individual consumers, and are only to be sold to businesses, educational institutions, and governmental agencies who need flexibility in installing and deploying many copies of Office.

These Volume Licenses should not be sold to consumers because they are not permanent licenses; they are subject to a current Volume Licensing Agreement that has a finite term, sort of like a lease.  Consumers thinking they purchased permanently licensd software would understandably be upset when their software stopped working at the end of a lease.

If your use of this now-blocked volume licensing installation of Office Professional 2003 is in association with an organization that may be using volume licenses, please report this issue to your IT support staff for further assistance.  They should use a product key reading utility to extract the current product key and compare it to their presumably genuine product key.  If the installed product key does not match the genuine key issued to your organization, the IT staff may use the steps in the following MS KB article, or a third-party utility, to try to change the product key to their genuine key:  http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx/kb/895456  After chnaging to a genuine product key, revalidate Office at www.microsoft.com/genuine

If you purchased this Office Professional 2003 thinking it was a legitimate retail licenses for this product, you were sold counterfeit software.  If possible, contact the seller to return the software for a full refund or for replacement with genuine retail licenses for these products.

You can also review the FAQ http://www.microsoft.com/genuine/downloads/FAQ.aspx?displaylang=en#ID0EKNAC to see if you qualify for a discounted or a complimentary copy of Office.

One other possibility is that at one time your computer did have a Genuine installation of Office installed, but for some reason it was replaced with the current installation which is nongenuine.  This could have happened if you took your computer to a repair shop and they reinstalled Windows and/or some or all of your programs.  You Get Genuine once again by uninstalling the current nongenuine installation of Office and using your Genuine Microsoft hologrammed Office installation CDs, along with the genuine Product Key found on your Office Edition's Certificate of Authenticity, to put back the genuine installation of Office you may have already had on the computer
