How to Upgrade CRM 3.0 on SQL 2000 on SBS 2003 to CRM 4.0 on SQL 2008 SBS 2008 RRS feed

  • Question

  • Our client has a working CRM 3.0 install on SBS 2003 Pro box with SQL 2000.  They are purchasing a new server with SBS 2008 Pro and SQL 2008.  Normally, I would upgrade V3 to V4 then migrate to the new box.  However, since V4 won't run on SQL 2000 and V3 won't run on SQL 2008, what do I do?

It seems that we'd have to upgrade SQL to 2005 on the old box, then upgrade CRM, then migrate.  Any comments are appreciated!

    Thanks!

  • Your plan to upgrade SQL on the older hardware seems to be the least complex path -  assuming you're comfortable that the hardware is stable long enough to upgrade to 2005. - (If you think your server is on the edge of failure, go the VPC route.)

(If you do use the VPC, you'll need to redeploy a couple of times and that introduces risks - particularly if you don't create matching users for every user who has existed and worked in CRM since it was first installed.)

  • Alternatively, use a VPC and perform the upgrade there, redeploying the database. If the hardware in the old box isn't up for the upgrade, this can be a good way to go.
