Is Whole Disk Encryption with Home Server possible? RRS feed

  • Question

  • I am using Windows 7 Ultimate with bitlocker protection on my drive. When I backup that data to WHS it is not encrypted. Is it possible to use bitlocker or some other add-in to provide whole disk encryption for WHS?

  • Because of the way whole disk encryption works, Windows Home Server will only back up the unencrypted data. In theory, you could use a tool (not Bitlocker, I'm afraid) which would create a container for a virtual encrypted disk. The problem with that is that the container would probably change rather dramatically every time it was written, and that would result in backing up much "changed" data that didn't actually change at all.
I'm not on the WHS team, I just post a lot. :)

I don't know of any way to do that.  However, the backup database is stored in a proprietary format so you can't just attach a hard drive to any PC and pull data out of it.
