Can't Activate with an brand new, legit product key

Question

Hello all,
I am trying to downgrade a computer from W8 back to W7 because it is used in a robotics competition where W7 is required due to a network problem. Another mentor installed a temporary version and now I am trying to install the new product key I purchased. I read that I could go to a higher level product, so I purchased W7 Pro and have the product key. But when I try to activate it I get an error message saying it is not a valid key for this type of installed product. Shouldn't it allow me to activate with the higher level key?

you will have to install pro. the product key must match the edition of windows installed.
you have home premium installed with the default key.

It is not possible to purchase just the Key - except through very limited channels.
Where did you get this from?
If you purchased the full install pack, you will need to do a reinstall with the valid Pro disk and Key.

You will need to perform a Windows 7 Anytime Upgrade to Windows 7 Professional. (It appears you are trying to just change the product key which will not work when upgrading). Since it appears you do not have a perpetual product key for the current Windows 7 Home Premium installation, you will need to purchase a Full Retail Windows 7 Professional product key.
