No icon appears on the login screen that says "To begin, click your user name"...there's nothing to click!

Hello!
When I boot up my computer, I'm taken to the blue screen where I can normally click on the icon to let me into my desktop. Unfortunately, that icon has disappeared and I can't log in to my computer. The user name was not password protected before. Is there something I can do to get that icon back so that I can log onto my computer? I've tried restarting the computer in safe mode but it just brings me to the same screen with larger font.
When I hit control-alt-del twice, I get a username but none of the passwords that I enter work. Is there a default that I can use?
Thoughts? Thanks so much for any help you can give!!!
