  • Exams 70-640, 70-646 and 70-642 are Windows Server 2008 exams whereas 70-410, 70-411 and 70-412 are Windows Server 2012 exams.  You don't need to pass the 2012 exams to take the 2008 exams.

  • Hi!

First off, be sure to review all the information Microsoft publishes for the 70-410 exam. It includes all the skills that are measured in the exam as well as offers many different training options. Pay special attention to the fact that this exam is getting a major update. Starting in January, 2014, it will include new questions for Windows Server 2012 R2. because of this update, most of the training materials do not include the new R2 features. You will need to cram up on those Windows Server 2012 R2 features if take the exam in 2014. Here it is: http://www.microsoft.com/learning/en-us/exam-70-410.aspx

Putting that aside, there are a lot of training materials available for you. If you look on Amazon.com, you will see that some books get better reviews than others. Specifically, I think you will find the "Inside/Out" series on Windows Server 2012 (R2) by William Stanek to be better study guides than the actual 70-410 exam study books. Here are a couple that look pretty good:

Be sure to check out Microsoft Virtual Academy listed under the exam's preparation options: http://www.microsoftvirtualacademy.com/training-courses/windows-server-2012-technical-overview

It is up to you if you want to purchase a practice exam from Kaplan or MeasureUp, described under the exam's preparation tools. They do a great job of simulating the real exam while including links back to TechNet documentation to help you understand the exam answers.

Check out the 70-410 forum and wiki: http://borntolearn.mslearn.net/certification/server/f/495.aspx

Finally, use TechNet as a place you can find almost everything else: http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/hh831620.aspx

    Good luck!

    Best wishes, Davin Mickelson
