CRM 3.0 or CRM 4 workgroups server

Question
-
Apologies in advance for some perhaps simple questions, but we all have to start somewhere.
I have an MSN partnership subscription, and very kindly they send me an interesting selection of software each quarter. (some of it I can even use!)
1.What I would like to know is.... Where can I find info on how to install/configure CRM 3.0 small business edition server set up, and CRM outlook setup? (2 seaorate disks)
2. What is Microsoft dynamics CRM 4.0 workgroup server? (1 disk)
Basic overviews, or pointers are fine. I have read all the 'guff' that you get on the Microsoft site, and I'm afraid that it was written by a salesperson.
I get this software each quarter, and I have no idea what it does or how to install it, who can help me install it, offer advice, or even why I should install it, there is a hole here somewhere, and I am in it.
Any legal suggestions gratefully received.
thanks in advance McP.Thursday, June 11, 2009 1:48 PM

CRM 4.0 Workgroud Edition only give you 5 user licenses. Also it requires Windows 2003 SBS and SQL Server 2005. CRM 3.0 is the earlier version, if you have both, I would suggest that you go with CRM 4.0.
Just to be clear, CRM 4.0 is an application, not a server product.
Once you have it setup correctly and configured all of the users, all of your users will able to access it and share information.

Hi Rob,
The latest version of Microsoft Dynamics CRM is 4.0. I would recommend that you install the 4.0 version. If you would like to get more information on how to install the software, I would advice you to download the CRM 4.0 Implementation Guide.
You can get it from the link below. Hope this helps.

Just in case you are wondering what Microsoft CRM 4.0 is, I would suggest you to visit the Microsoft Dynamics CRM website. I love MS CRM because you can do a lot with it. Enables to have a 360 degree view on their customers...

Thank you Darren, I am downloading the information now.
So would you say that I would be best to install the CRM 4.0 from the CRM 4.0 workgroup server disk that I have, rather than installing the CRM 3.0 server, and client disks?
Also if it is installed on a server, can other client users in the office/externally VPN, share the information? We have Small business server, and exchange server here.

Thank you Darren, to cearify.
We have a server with SBS 2003 running, you're saying I need SQL server 2005. (have 2008 as well, is this preferrable?)
Would I install SQL 2005 only on the server, or on each client machine?
You say "Just to be clear, CRM 4.0 is an application, not a server product." Confusingly the disk says on it "Microsoft Dynamics CRM 4.0 workgroup server"
Would I install using the supplied single disk "Microsoft Dynamics CRM 4.0 workgroup server" on each client machine as well?
(I do have CRM 3.0, and 4.0 but will use 4.0 at your recommendation)(There are only 4 of us, so 5 licences are fine)
Sorry about the probable dumb questions, but I am in a small business, and information is hard to come by, I do everything here..... (nearly)

Hi Rob,
For your database, you can use either or.
Would I install using the supplied single disk "Microsoft Dynamics CRM 4.0 workgroup server" on each client machine as well?
No, you will install CRM on the server using the "Microsoft Dynamics CRM 4.0 workgroup server" disk , then all of your users can access CRM from the browser. If they would like to use CRM within Outlook, they can install the CRM Outlook client, which you can download from the Microsoft webiste.
You are asking good questions, if you have any more questions, feel free to post it on this forum.
