Cannot login to create an account with my son's Live ID RRS feed

  • Question

  • I am trying to share a folder with my son's latop.  He has a Live ID.  The ID works with XBox and it is from a custom domain like my Live ID.  I am trying to login into the mesh.com website to create a mesh account for him.  When I click on the Sign In button and sign in with his Live ID, it takes me to a new page that never returns any content.  I have tried clearing out temporary files and cookies with no impact.  I have also tried using another computer with no change in the behavior.

Can a child account be used with Mesh?

    Thanks,
    Rob Cannon

  • I am pretty sure it is because of the child account.  My wife and I have logins that work using the same custom domain.  My daughter's account presents the same issue.  But my oldest son's account (who recently turned 13) works.  I think 13 is when they stop being a child in the eye's of Live ID.

    I will submit a bug.

    Hi Rob,

I can confirm 100% that this is by design.  Unfortunately we (Mesh) doesn't have a way to determine who will be using the NT account on a computer and to ensure our compliance we disabled use for Passport accounts that are set with the "under 13" flag.

I'll update your bug to a suggestion to provide a mechanism for future releases to our user interface team to review though!

  • I don't think that a child account would be an issue, but I wonder if the custom domain might be. Can you submit a bug report per the instructions here:

How to Submit Bugs and Live Mesh Logs

Note that you probably won't get a response to the bug report, though. It will be transferred to the internal system to be assigned to the appropriate development group.

  • Thanks for submitting the bug report. It does indeed sound like the child account designation is the issue. I can't find any information confirming this, so the bug report is the way to go. I'll check and see if we can get a quick answer, though.

  • It would be helpful to have a message to that effect when I try to create an account on the mesh web site using such an account.

And, it sure would be nice if this were mentioned in the Help text or service overview details. I looked at the terms of use and it is basically a generic document. And I found nothing about age restrictions anywhere I looked.
