  • If you purchased an upgrade product key and attempted a clean installation then be aware that a Windows 7 upgrade key requires the previous copy of Windows to be on the computer until after the Windows 7 product key has been entered and accepted.  You did not provide any background so we cannot tell.

Did you request a refund after purchasing this key?

Did you attempt phone activation?  Please tell us what steps you took before receiving an error message.

  • aah ok - sorry, no i haven't requested a refund but i did use the key from a clean install. My computer refused to boot so had to do a clean install.

Saying that - i have a genuine windows xp key so really it's an upgrade with out the original installed heh

I found a post on the internet in another forum which showed me how to change a entry in the registry in order to register with my upgrade key - it stated in the post on the forum that it had been confirmed by microsoft as ok.

  • Anybody can say anything is OK on the web.  If you have your XP key then find a disk (it has to be the right edition and license type) and do it right.  You can also try phone activation.  Be sure to talk to a live rep and perhaps the XP key will suffice without having to reinstall.
