Vista validation with new motherboard? Not OEM RRS feed

  • Question

  •

I bought Vista Ultimate and installed it onto a brand new harddrive of a computer I built. I am looking to move that hard drive to a new, more up to date computer (new motherboard, faster cpu, more memory). Will I have problems with my Vista validation? I hear that when it's pre-installed on a manufacturers computer, you have to have the same motherboard in order for Vista to recognize you as the same owner, but what about my situation where I installed Vista myself? Do I have to buy a new Vista license if I want to upgrade my motherboard?

  • Jermayn,

If you purchased an OEM license for Vista, it is not transferrable to the new motherboard and processor, so you'll have to get another copy of Vista.

If you bought Vista in the fancy curved clear plastic box, you have a retail license for Vista, you can transfer it to the new motherboard and processor.
