Performance on Home Server decreased tremendously after PP3 installed RRS feed

  • Question

  • Before installing PP3, my home server performance was spectacular. I could copy files and connect to the console within seconds. After applying PP3, my performance has come to a crawl. My CPU is being pegged at 100 percent and my 2GB of RAM is inadquate. I have stopped the windows search service and wonder what else can be stopped. Right now the home server is ridiculously bogged down.

Is it possible to remove PP3 because the performance makes it unusuable. Because it is so slow, I sometimes cannot even connect using the console and I think it is impacting other home server functionality.

What can I do to get this working like it used to.

    thanks

  • Windows Search 4.0 is installed with PP3.  As kariya21 pointed out this will cause it to re-index.  This may take some time, depending on how many files you have.  I would give it time to get through the re-indexing before unstalling PP3.  Once done, you should not see what you're seeing now.

  • I hard booted the server and was able to login like normal last night. This morning it returned to the sluggishness I had previously. I was abled to remote in and I stopped the windows search service. This helped a little but not much. I opened the task manager and showed all the running processes. I discovered that the process fssm32.exe associated with the f-security home server virus protection was using all my cpu. I killed this process and my utilitization went down. I can now login to my console without issues at any time I request.

I have opened a support ticket with f-secure because it is there product that killed my performance. Hopefully they will resolve or I will just not use the virus protection on the home server. But it does not look like a problem with pp3 which is great.

    thanks for the suggestions

I can see how it might have problems when you first install PP3 (since it re-indexes everything), but once it's done, it should be fine.  Have you looked at the Task Manager to see what's using your CPU cycles?

  • When I was able to remote desktop to the computer the cpu and memory were just maxing. It looked like I had windows search running so I ended that task. I had my remote desktop connection but I really didn't see high memory usage on anything except the connector software. I am now not able to log into the machine using either the connector software or remote desktop and I think it is because the machine lacks the resources to allow the connection.

I have not changed a single thing. At 2 pm I logged in remotely fine, at 6 pm I cannot. I think it is a resource issue but how can I log into my server remotely. If I plug the network cable directly into my laptop do you think I can then use remote desktop. I tried this with my Vista machine and it didn't find it all. On my XP machine I earlier logged in successfully to the machine.

I am thinking of removing pp3 because I think it did something to cause my resources to be gobbled up. I have not added any new addins just pp3 and it has really slowed the system down. Not sure what to do if I cannot connect to my media smart server though because of resources. I am thinking of doing a hard shutdown of the server.
