  •  How are you doing? I have passed the 642 exam, and I am currently studying for the 640 and then 646.  I might be able to take and pass the 640 before 7/31/13, but I won't be able to complete both before 7/31/13. My questions are will I be able to take these tests after 7/31/13, and how is Microsoft handling this.  If I am understanding correctly, I will be able to take an pass these certs, but will not hold the server admin title? I know there is a cert to upgrade these to 2012, do u know anything about that test? Please be a complete as you can be.

  • Hi Bklynbios,

Thanks for your post, and welcome to the forum.

Relax, you have nothing to worry about. Exams 70-640, 642, and 646 were never scheduled for retirement on July 31, 2013. Furthermore, according to the Microsoft training support rep I spoke to last Friday, they are not currently scheduled for retirement. Therefore, you can take them whenever you're ready.

However, the MCITP: Server Administrator on Windows Server 2008 designation will be retired on July 31, 2013, to be replaced by the MCSA: Windows Server 2008 designation. The exams are the same, 70-640, 642 and 646, and the certification is equivalent, but the title has been changed from MCITP to MCSA.

Since you've already passed 70-642, when you pass 70-640 and 70-646 you will become a Microsoft Certified Solutions Associate on Windows Server 2008, that is, MCSA: Windows Server 2008.

Once you've attained your MCSA: Windows Server 2008 certification, you need only pass Exam 70-417, the Windows Server 2012 upgrade exam, to become an MCSA: Windows Server 2012.

All the necessary information is provided at the following Microsoft site:

    http://www.microsoft.com/learning/en-us/mcsa-windows-server-2008-certification.aspx

    Good luck with your certifications.

    James
