Getting into software development? RRS feed

  • Question

  • Hi,

    Thank you in advance!

I am changing career. My previous job is irrelevant. I desire to be software developer, maybe even software engineer later on.

I am quite interested in Microsoft software and Microsoft phone software development,

I wanted to know where to start and how to secure a job?

I have no college education and I have tried unsuccessfully to apply for apprenticeships /traineeships. And I am kinda stuck.

I started to learn .net and I still have long way to go to create any software.

  • Being a good programmer starts with passion to build your own software. Start with building a tool or (web / phone) app about a subject that sounds fun and useful to you. Having a fun purpose makes it a lot easier to solve issues that you will face. Software is very complex and you will face a lot of issues and bugs. Note that most of the time you will be busy with troubleshooting and debugging your software. Perhaps that doesn't sound motivating, but after a lot of troubleshooting and 'googling' it will start to feel like playing with Lego ;) And that's when the fun starts! I guess you should be able to run your first Hello world ASP.NET site in a few days. Have a look at Microsoft Developer Network (MSDN) and run a few tutorials.

Getting a job without college education will be quite a challenge I think....

  • Hi Jason,

You could start by looking into the Microsoft Virtual Academy as they have good collection of courses on Microsoft product. Hope this helps you.
