Reinstalling XP issue - please help RRS feed

  • Question

  • Hi,
I am currently trying to reinstall XP, because of a trojan I haven't been able to get rid of. My computer came with XP installed. As I already had service pack two, I went through the
"How to integrate Windows XP Service Pack 2 files into the Windows XP installation folder" process described at http://support.microsoft.com/kb/900871/.
After running this and trying to start the reinstall, I received this message "Setup cannot upgrade your current installation of Windows XP. Your current installation of windows is not a supported upgrade path.

I don't know what to do now. Does anyone know what will happen if I uninstall XP and then try to reinstall without another operating system underneath it?

It's likely, since you are following the steps in the MS KB you mentioned, that you are trying to do a repair reinstallation of your installed XP.  Your best option is to use the Dell Operating System Reinstallation CD that may have come with your computer as it shipped from Dell.  If you did not get an OS Reinstallation CD, contact Dell tech support and they will ship one to you for about $15.

If you have a Dell CD but it is at SP1 or SP1a level and you have SP2 applied to the computer, as you mentioned you do, use the steps at this site http://vbdotnet.home.comcast.net/XP_SP2.htm to slipstream SP2 into your Dell CD.  The normal slipstream method and Autostreamer will not work with the Dell CD.

If you are trying to do a complete, clean installation of XP, then you may want to see if your Dell has Dell PC Restore by Symantec installed (later models of Dell will have Norton Ghost installed).  This program uses data on a hidden partition on the hard disk drive to do a reimaging of the user portion of the hard disk so that it will be put back to "out-of-the-box" condition.  To access this program, restart the computer and at the Dell logo, press and hold CTRL, press F11, then quickly release both at the same time.  Note that this procedure destroys all user data and programs on the hard disk, so be sure to backup and offload your data before doing it.

    Good luck!

Please follow these steps for assistance:

Step 1 is to run the utility at this link http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/?linkid=52012, then click the Windows tab, click the "Copy" button, then paste the report into a response in this thread.

Step 2 is to look on the computer or with the materials you received with the computer or with your retail purchase of  Windows to see if you have a Certificate of Authenticity (COA).  If you have one, tell us about the COA.  Tell us:

    1.  What edition of Windows XP is it for, Home, Pro, or Media Center, or another version of Windows?

    2.  Does it read "OEM Software" or "OEM Product" in black lettering?

    3.  Or, does it have the computer manufacturer's name in black lettering?

    4.  DO NOT post the Product Key.

Not sure what to look for?  See this page for reference:  http://www.microsoft.com/resources/howtotell/en/coa.mspx

  • I am also trying to do a complete reinstall of XP pro on my compaq laptop. I copied everything I want to save onto an external hard drive and I ordered a CD. It must be the wrong one because I get an error message and it won't let me do anything. Is there a way to access the "hidden partition" I keep hearing about??? I'd like to avoid paying for and waiting for another CD if possible. Thanks.
