After 3 years Windows 7 claiming non-genuine and key has changed???? RRS feed

  • Question

  • Greetings,

I am a system builder and registered MS system builder. The copy of Windows 7 in question is OEM, purchased from D&H Dist. and has been installed on a custom build and working for about 3 years now. All of the sudden the client calls and tells me about the non Genuine issue.

I ran a key finder and noticed that for some reason the key reported does not match COA sticker on the tower. I personally installed and activated this copy on this machine 3 years ago and again after a re-format/install after malware infection about a year ago using the genuine and original key each time.

I did not change the key?!?! Also, I tried reactivating and I tried to change the key to match the COA and activate but it reports the key is not a valid Windows 7 key.

The diagnostic report is below: **Please note - I've included the COA sticker key (partial) is at the very end of the report incase it helps.

  • The installed Key is still the Default Key :(

From where did you purchase the OEM package? - there have been a number of cases where such packages have turned out to be counterfeits, and such counterfeits are harder to spot than the 'retail' ones.

You could try ringing the Activation Center, and asking them if the Key is indeed not correct

    Just in case...

0xC004F050 usually means that you've misread a character - either C/G/6 or B/8 or Y/V are the most common, an O/0 is almost always a Q

    Note that the following characters cannot be used - A E I L N O S U Z 1 0 - so don't bother trying unless you like the noise it makes :)

  • There are a number of problems here:

    1) there is no SLIC table in the BIOS to validate an OEM_SLP Product Key

    2) the installed Key is the Default Key for Windows 7 HomePremium

    3) The machine is based on a Retail motherboard, as far as I can tell - and therefore doesn't qualify for an OEM_SLP  Key.

We therefore need to look closely at 2 things:

    a) the source - where did you buy this machine from? was it new? Have you replaced the motherboard?

    b) The License: Please give the EXACT wording on the COA sticker (without quoting the actual Product Key) - this will tell us what type of Key it is.

Noel - Thanks so much for your reply.

This machine was custom built by me for the client several years ago. All hardware is original to the build and nothing has been changed. The OEM product key on the COA was used when the unit was originally built and OS was installed and again after a malware infection the required the drive to be wiped and the OS re-installed. This was over a year ago. Activated both times with no issues. This is what has me concerned - how did the key change suddenly? It should read as the COA sticker.

    The COA sticker reads:

Windows 7 Home Prem OEM Software

    GFC-02060

*product key* (partial key in original post)

    00174-038-962-599

No different then hundreds of previous builds with same OEM software through a MS certified distributor. This is the only one I am aware of that has had this issue.

My next question would be: Is there a way to implement the original key without a format/reinstall? I know it won't let me change the key as it is now. Says it's not a valid Win7 key.

    Thanks again, Noel!

  • That certainly looks legit to me - I was worried that it may have been a bogus OEM_COA_SLP Key/sticker.

The only real reason for a Key to go 'MIA' is for the registry to have gotten corrupted - most often by using a registry cleaner.

I would suggest resetting the Licensing Store fully, by following the below procedure...

    Recreate the Licensing Store

Go to Start > All Programs > Accessories

Right-Click on Command Prompt and select Run as Administrator - accept the UAC prompt

Run the following commands in the Command Prompt window, using the Enter key at the end of each

    net stop sppsvc

(wait until the service has stopped before entering the following lines)

    CD %windir%\ServiceProfiles\NetworkService\AppData\Roaming\Microsoft\SoftwareProtectionPlatform

    REN tokens.dat tokens.bar

    net start sppsvc

    slui.exe

After a couple of seconds the Windows Activation dialog will appear.

You may be asked to re-activate and/or re-enter your product key, or Activation may occur automatically.

If you are asked for your Key, use the one on the COA sticker on the machine's case

Reboot and Post back with a new MGADiag report.

(Note: the Line 'CD %win......\SoftwareProtectionPlatform' is all on one line - it may be broken in the Forum listing)

  • I will give that a try as soon as I'm able to coordinate with the client and remote-in to give it a try. I'll post back after that.

  • Noel -- Please find the new report below. I did what you suggested, it did ask me to reenter key but wouldn't except the key on the COA sticker telling me it's not a valid Win7 key.

Sorry for the delay on this.

    Thanks a bunch!

  • Noel - Just wanted to follow-up and thank you for your help. I couldn't get it fixed however, after a format/reinstall, I was able to get it activated using the original COA sticker product code.

Not sure what was more difficult, troubleshooting the issue or talking the client into a wipe/reinstall....lol

Again, thanks for your time and help. Take care!
