OneCare has encountered a problem and needs to close.

Question

Any ideas why OneCare won't open? I am trying to install OneCare on a second computer with an up to date Windows XP OS. The first install worked fine with Vista. I've installed and uninstalled several times. OneCare seems to be operating as I have the green 1 logo in my system tray. However, I haven't been able to open it at all. Each time I get the same message "OneCare has encountered a problem and needs to close."
It's not giving me much to go on. Any thoughts?

This could be caused by a damaged net framework 2.0 installation. To repair net framework :
Start>Control Panel>add/remove programs. Select net framework 2.0 then select "Change/Remove", then select Repair on the next window. If the repair does not resolve the One Care issue try uninstalling net framework 2.0 then reinstalling. Net framework 2.0 can be downloaded here - http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?FamilyID=0856EACB-4362-4B0D-8EDD-AAB15C5E04F5&displaylang=en
If the issue persists please contact support.

Thanks Jim, I suspect that you are correct in isolating .net as the problem. Unfortunately I got errors while trying to repair and uninstall .net 2.0 (neither process completed), so I can't say for sure that a corrupt .net framework is the cause. Looks like support is my next step.

You might try this net framework uninstall tool - http://blogs.msdn.com/astebner/archive/2006/05/30/611355.aspxThursday, January 3, 2008 2:49 AMModerator

Thanks Stephen, all four services listed in your previous post are set to automatic and appear to be working. As I mentioned to Jim, I pretty sure .net 2.0 is the culpret, but since I can't uninstall .net, I'm kind of stuck.
