WHS 2011 Shared Folders RRS feed

  • Question

  • WHS 2011 is usually set up with two HDDs; one split into two partitions; C: for the system and D: for Data.  The second HDD would then be assigned as a backup.

I have noticed, that by default, all the default shared folders (Documents, Music, Pictures etc.) go into the shared folders on the D: drive but any user added ones go onto the E: drive.  There does not appear to be an option to change the drive when setting up a new shred folder.

Does Microsoft have a reason for this?  It is slightly annoying if one wants to have all the shared folders on one HDD as one has to move them after setting up.

  • I have recently installed WHS2011 on server with 2 disks (1 disk and 1 mirror pair). By default it installed the shared folders under ServerFolders to D: which it created as second partition from the first disk. Nothing was put on the RAID disk.

I then moved all these folders using the Dashboard. When in Server Folders and Hard Drives, there is a move the folder link on the right hand side. I just did this for the default folders. I have set up some new folders and put these directly on my RAID disk.

  • Guido,

Can WHS2011 then mark a separate Backup HDD for the new location of the moved folder?

    Best wishes,

    Michael

  • You can learn about backing up your client computers and your server in the online help.

I'm not on the WHS team, I just post a lot. :)

  • Michael, when you run the Add a Folder wizard from the Home Server 2011 dashboard, the first screen allows you to name your new folder and set its location.  Next to the Location field there is a Browse button.  If you click this, you can choose a different drive for your new shared folder, if desired.
