Retrieve personal files from a non-bootable Windows 8 laptop

  Is it possible to use a 3rd party software such as DOS Navigator to retrieve my personal files from a non-bootable Windows 8 laptop?

  I've downloaded the software from a website but am wondering how to install the program and use it to access c:\My Documents. I hope I can do something about it before reinstalling Windows 8.
  

  After searching some websites, it seems that I have to move the HDD to another computer and access the files from there.

  Any help would be much appreciated. Thanks.
