Another one with error: 0xC004D401 RRS feed

  • Question

I just got my computer back from HP where I had shipped it because the cd drive wasn't reading disks. I reinstalled all of my programs that I had on my computer before it was shipped, only this time I keep getting that error. I used system restore and the error isn't there before I install Microsoft updates. I have tested my programs and it works until the updates. I'm wondering if that could be the problem. Control Panel opens and then immediately closes and I can't open personalize on the desktop. I did the services.msc and clicked start and when I do the error pops up. My computer didn't come with a Vista cd, so reinstalling it would be out of the question. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Well, it's been three days since I have done a system restore without updates and I have not had any error whatsoever. So I have come to the conclusion that it's the updates. Now I would really like to find out which one it is so I can install the 30 that won't mess my system up. I don't know if there's any other system information you need to help me so....*twiddles thumbs*

  • Hello ADQuatt,

I beleive this support document may help resolve your issue:;EN-US;931573

"You may be prompted to activate Windows Vista on a computer on which Windows Vista was already activated by a Volume License or OEM installation"

Please tell me if this does resolve your issue.

    Thank you,

  • Thanks for responding. I tried to download it, but when I click open, nothing happens. I would download it from Windows Updates, but it doesn't open. I'll do a system restore, install that update and then the others, maybe that will work. I'll edit this with the results.

Well that didn't work, but I did reactivate it over the phone and so far so good. The only bad thing is that it says "This copy of windows is not genuine" in the right hand corner of the desktop, but I read that it will go away after a few reboots.....hopefully.

  • Hi ADQuatt,

Actually it sounds like it did work! (since you you reactivated when before, you couldn't)  And yes, typically if the issue is resolved, 2 reboots will remove the non-genuine message.

    Thank you,

Well I restarted.........and now I'm back to square one. Could it have reverted back or maybe it really is an update. I looked at the listed conflicts and I have none so I don't know what could be causing it. I'll cancel automatic updates until it's resolved.

  • Now it's worse than before. I can't even access my computer. Where as before it would work, but have pop ups of errors, now it won't even allow me to get beyond the "The Windows Vista Home Basic product key you typed is invalid for activation." I try clicking on the "access your computer with reduced functionality" but when I click on it I get redirected to this site or an error. Now, I am not about to pay for another product key. I have also contacted HP regarding this, however, I seem to be getting no where fast, and it is urgent that I get my computer back to the way it was.
