  • All I can suggest is attempting Telephone Activation and talking to an operator - they may be able to get you sorted.

  • I'm not sure what the problem is, then :(

Try this - it may help....

    Open Windows Explorer (Computer)

    Navigate to the C:\Windows folder

Find the System32 sub-folder and right-click on it

    select Properties

Clear the 'blob' from the 'Read-only (Only applies to files in folder)' box by clicking on it until it's plain white.

    Click on Apply.

Make sure that the radio button for 'Apply changes to this folder, subfolders and files' is set, and click OK.

After a couple of seconds, you'll be told there is an error - click on the 'Ignore all' button.

Wait for it to finish - it could take a couple of minutes.

OK out, and exit Windows Explorer.

    Reboot twice

Run another MGADiag report, and see if things have changed.

  • Hi,  no it didn't change anything, still the same error.

Of the 3 things microsoft is checking for,  I wonder if it is the fact that i have an additional hard drive in there now that may not of been in there in 2006 when i got or originally installed this XP-PRO.   could adding a hard drive cause this?  I'm reasonably sure this is the correct desktop, since the BIOS does check out.

I don't remember what the 3rd item micosoft is using to check during validation.

  • Additional hard drives have no impact on Activation (unless the original HD is removed)

I don't believe that your problem is the result of hardware changes - but it's the result of software corruption either in the registry or the file system.

Unfortunately my knowledge of XP's foibles is limited, and the MGADiag is not very helpful here.

    http://support.microsoft.com/kb/916247 may help

Please open a COmmand Prompt window and run the following command

    CACLS  "c:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\Windows Genuine Advantage" /T

    Post the results..

Here are some instructions to make life easier :)

    1) To open a Command Prompt Window click on Start, All Programs, Accessories –Command Prompt,

    2) To run the commands easier, highlight the block of commands, and right-click on the highlight – select Copy. In the CP Window, click on the black/white icon at top left – select Paste. The commands will run but may not complete the last command, so hit the Enter Key once.

    3) To copy the results... click on the Black/White icon in the top left, and select Edit... 'Select All', and hit the Enter key - then use Ctrl+V or r-click+Paste to paste it into your response.

  • There appears to be a single permission missing in your output, which is present in my install - let's see if it makes any difference :)

please run the following command from an Administrator account.

    CACLS "c:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\Windows Genuine Advantage\data\data.dat" /G "Power Users":C

    (all in one line)

then try validating at www.microsoft.com/genuine/validate using Internet Explorer.

    Post a new MGADiag report.

  • running now in background.   I've found 3 xp-pro disk 2 with service pack 2, and 1 with service pack 3.   when i ran SFC /SCANNOW it asked for Service pack 3, so that is what i put in it.

  • how do i create a new SYSTEM ADMINISTRATOR account? the full and explicide rights?

I was reading another thread with a simular problem, and it said something about administrator account under a user name didn't work, and when using the system administrator account it validated no problem.

my computer only had an account under my name with administrator rights.  I created a new user called System Administrator, with administrator rights, and it still doesn't validate, get the same failure.

  • There is only ever one full Administrator account on a Windows machine - by design.

You can have any number of User Administrator accounts (i.e. members of the 'Administrators' group)

I suspect that what you saw was in reference to either Vista or Windows 7 - where the 'Administrator' account has a special meaning, and special prerogatives.

Since you're using XP Pro, you have normal mode access to the Administrator account - simply log out and you should be offered the option to log in as Administrator. The default password is blank, unless you or whoever installed Windows changed it.

  • All I can suggest is attempting Telephone Activation and talking to an operator - they may be able to get you sorted.

  • I take that telephone activation worked for you?

Please post a new MGADiag report so we can see what the differences are!

    Good luck, either way.
