We are looking at the possibility of using WHS in our very small business to backup all of our desktops as well as our Windows Storage Server.
Will the WHS Connector software work on Windows Storage Server 2003?Tuesday, July 7, 2009 3:56 PM

Backing up Windows Server to Windows Home Server isn't supported, but normally it will work fine. That said, you should not use Windows Home Server as your only backup tool for the Windows Storage Server computer. Also, will you be able to log in to the Windows Storage Server desktop to install the connector?
I'm not on the WHS team, I just post a lot. :)- Proposed as answer by kariya21Moderator Wednesday, July 8, 2009 2:44 AM

I have a helpful little bit from one of our backup developers:
Automount is the feature which assigns a drive letter to a newly-discovered disk. Automount must be enabled on the client PC for single-file restore to work. It is always enabled on Windows XP. It is enabled by default on all platforms EXCEPT Windows Server 2003. We've seen it disabled on some Srv03 machines where the owner had never heard of it. We don't officially support Srv03 as a WHS client, but this is the only actual problem I know of.To query the setting (Srv03+):
C> mountvol
At the end of the report, if disabled, you will see something like:
"New volumes are not mounted automatically when added to the system. To mount a volume, you must create a volume mount point."
To enable automount (Srv03+):
C> mountvol /E
To disable automount (Srv03+; this will cause single-file restore to fail):
C> mountvol /N
Thanks

While I know its not the ideal backup tool, it is better than nothing, which unfortunately what we currently have.
I do have access to the WSS desktop, so installing the connector shouldn't be an issue.Tuesday, July 7, 2009 10:22 PM -
