Backup Configuration Problem ?? RRS feed

  • Question

  • Hello,  I run a WHS and have set up a few for several of my clients (tech support guy).  I have a problem with the backup config.  There may be a fix or a work-around, but I couldn't find any.  This is the situation:  Say you have a PC in the WHS universe and everything is set; backup works great, etc.  Then, you add a drive temporarily, like a USB or even a second drive to the sytem, which you then take out.  WHS sees the new drive.  And if you take it out, then you get an error on all of your machines that the backup failed. It wants to "see" that ohter drive and there is no way I have found to correct this.  This is a big problem for me as I often repair sytems in my network by adding a customer drive into one of my service PCs as a second drive to copy user data files off (usually because the drive won't boot...).  I just want to be able to correct the backup config (by being able to delete that bad drive record in the config).  Can you help me out?  This is driving me nuts.

  • Jim, your best bet is going to be to turn off backups for one of your PCs (the one you normally use to connect client hard drives) then back it up manually when you don't have a client drive connected. The information about the drives that "belong to" a particular client PC are part of the backup database, and can't be changed.
