Your machine is too old to support an OEM_SLP Key for Windows 7 – it was built in December 2008, while Win 7 was not released to manufacture until August 2009.The disk you used was not part of the free upgrade program – they used OEM_NSLP Keys. Therefore this installation was done using the Win 7 Recovery disk from another Dell machine. Recovery disks are ONLY valid for the machine for which they were designed, not for any other model or make. For what version of Windows is the machine licensed, according to the COA sticker on the case (or inside the battery compartment)?

Noel D Paton:
Thanks for your response. I missed it for a while as i had forgotten to check the alert box.
I checked my sticker it says "Windows Vista Home Premium". However, the new disk which i used for installation was provided by Dell Support for this machine only. In fact Dell Technician himself ordered it for me. Initially Dell sent me 64bit CD which my laptop was not supporting so they again sent me 32bit disk. So what do you advise me to do next. thanks again !

The Dell techie is incompetent at best :(You *should* have got a Vista set of disks, NOT a Win 7 set. Phone them back and demand the proper set (I assume that you paid for this set?) that stands a chance of working on your machine,The only legal way you could get a Win7 install to work on this machine is if you purchased a License for Win 7 (either Upgrade or Full Retail).

This was an upgrade by dell (they did not charge me separately for the set as i have purchased extended warranty from them.) Before joining this forum, I brought up this issue with dell too and asked them for product key but they told me that dell CD does not require separate product key as they have an agreement with Microsoft. They told me that the reason for this issue is that i am not doing "clean set up" for Win 7 and provided me link to their standard set up instructions. So i did it again based on their instructions but still got the same problem after some time. When i called them back they told me that i am still doing "dirty setup" and their software division can help me in doing clean set up but i have to pay them separately in order to receive their services. To me it looks like they just want to make money out of it. Will you be able to tell me that what is a clean setup and what is a dirty setup? If this is an upgrade should i expect dell to provide me product key?

The Free Upgrade disks from Dell (and all other participating OEMs) used a different set of Keys to the Recovery disks. They were standard System Builder Keys, and did not require the BIOS SLIC table that OEM_SLP Keys do. The Key would have come on a sticker with the disk, and that should have also been attached to the system at the time.
Recovery disks are different to the Free Upgrade disks - Recovery disks require that the BIOS is Win7 compliant. The free Upgrade disks do not.
Both kind of disks can normally only do clean installs - they are designed that way, if you use the supplied Keys.
As far as a new Key is concerned, you can expect what you like, but I suspect that neither Dell nor MS will be interested in providing a free replacement, unless you can provide proof-of-purchase such as the disks and packaging, and emails or pro-forma invoices that accompanied them.
