  • You need to use the Activation Key that is printed on you COA Sticker, and the OS installed must match the one that is listed on the sticker as well.  Double check that you are doing this.

Please do not read this sentence. Please ignore the previous sentence.

  •   CScript Error- Can't find script engine VBScript -alternate solution   should help.

If not, please give the EXACT error messages you get when attempting the fix.

You possibly have other problems - so please post a new MGADiag report after attempting the above.

  • Ok--

So I did the reg query command and got this:

    <Default>   REG_SZ   C:\Program Files\Common Files\McAfee\System Core\ScriptSn.20121001143922.dll

I did have McAfee preinstalled on this PC, but opted not to continue a subscription so, it was uninstalled.  Apparently it's still causing problems.  Any advice from here is totally appreciated and helpful!  Thanks guys!  You've already gotten me further than I did on my own (slightly outdated) knowledge.

This is after I copied the code, attempted the regfix.reg, copied the query into a cmd prompt...  it still has the same VBscript error in the diagnostic.   The only real annoying thing this error is causing is the pop up telling me my Windows is not genuine, and causing my desktop background to disappear into a black screen.  All icons are there and I have full functionality of the PC, so this is pretty frustrating.

  • Is your installed AV McAfee? - what other AV's have you ever had installed on this machine? (what came pre-installed on it?)

  • No other AV, and only McAfee has ever been installed. It was preloaded onto the Dell that I got in December last year.  I never subscribed to it past the free trial stuff and they don't have a way of just shutting off the notifications to subscribe or renew or whatever, so away it went.   May not have been the brightest move ever, considering the current issue, but this just started happening after 8 months now (roughly).

  • OMG!!!

You MUST uninstall McAfee using the Programs listing - then run the Removal tool MCPR to get rid of the dregs.

Download the McAfee removal tool from:

    http://download.mcafee.com/products/licensed/cust_support_patches/MCPR.exe

Click Save, and save the file to a folder on your computer.

Navigate to the folder where you saved the file.

right-click on MCPR.exe and select 'Run as Administrator'  to run the removal tool.

    when complete, reboot.

Then download and install  Malwarebytes Anti-malware (free version) from  http://www.malwarebytes.org/products/malwarebytes_free/ - UNtick 'Enable free trial of MBAM PRO' at the end of the installation -  and update it, then run a full scan  in your main account, and Quick scans in any other user accounts.

Delete everything it finds and reboot

    Post a new MGADiag report

If the system says it's now activated, then you can install the free MSE

     http://windows.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/security-essentials-download

Again, run a FULL system scan and delete everything it finds.

You may still have some more detailed cleanup work to do - but this should get you on some sort of even keel, at least.
