  • Hello ugily dugily,

Here is a snippet of your mgadiag report:

    Office Status: 108 Invalid VLK

Microsoft Office Professional 2007 - 101 Not Activated

As you mentioned, your Toshiba currently has two installations of Office.

The installation of Office Enterprise 2007 is a nongenuine Volume Licensing installation done with an Invalid Volume Licensing Key.

The installation of Office Professional 2007 is a not yet activated retail license.

IMO the best thing to do given the circumstances is to purge both installations of Office, then do a fresh installation of the retail license for Office Professional 2007.

You can use the MS FixIt in the following KB article http://support.microsoft.com/kb/971179/ to uninstall both installations at once.  The advantage of using the FixIt is that it is supposed to also uninstall the Office license file, which is not normally uninstalled.  That's good for our purposes because we do not want the old, nongenuine license file being detected and causing the new installation to be misidentified as nongenuine.

    Here's what to do:

    1.  Restart the computer.
    2.  Keeping all Office applications closed, download and run the FixIt to remove all Office 2007 installations.  After the FixIt completes, restart the computer twice.
    3.  Using the retail Office Professional 2007 installation disc, install Office Professional 2007.  [Don't use the Office Enterprise disc because it's nongenuine software.]  After installation, open Word 2007.  You will be prompted to activate by the Office Activation Wizard.  Complete a normal online activation.  Next restart the computer.
    4.  After restart, and keeping all Office programs closed for the moment, visit www.microsoft.com/genuine and click on the Validate Office button.  Office should validate normally.  Restart.
    5.  After restart, open several Office programs to ensure you no longer see the nongenuine notices.
    6.  Next, start Windows Update.  Make the selection to have Windows Update check for updates for other Microsoft products such as Office.
    7.  Run Windows Update as many times as needed to gather and install all Office Service Packs and updates.

Post back to let us know how you did :-)

  • Thank you Dan for your reply and I will try that.  Just one more question before I uninstall everything.  I spent a great deal of time entering contacts in Outlook.  There are over 400 entries and I don't want to go through that again.  Will I lose my contact information if I uninstall everything and reinstall??
    Please advise.

  • Hello ugily dugily,

Uninstalling Office (and its component programs such as Outlook) is not designd to uninstall, delete, or affect your data in any way.  Your data is located in your user profile and not in the Program Files folders.  I have never personally run across a situation where uninstalling Office deleted documents or data.

Having said that, you would be crazy :-) to make any major change to your computer without backing up your data, and you should be making regular backups of any data you cannot afford to lose just as a matter of good computing practices.

This would be a great time to get acquainted with Backup and Restore in your Windows 7:  http://www.microsoft.com/windows/windows-7/features/backup-and-restore.aspx
