New Router = Cant access hp media server or computers by name - Help! RRS feed

  • Question

  • I just changed my wireless router to the Belkin N1 Vision and now I cannot access my home server shared folders or console by server name. I can only remote desktop by ip address. It is also affecting accessing my computers by name
    .

It seems to be a config in the router?

If anyone could help I would really appreciate it.

  • Hi,

Using Windows Explorer navigate to the Windows Home Server folder in Program Files, (on each Client,) and run 'Discovery.exe', this will re-associate each Client back with the Server.

If, after doing that, it still happens, post back with the results of running 'ipconfig /all' in a DOS box from the Client(s) and the server.

  • Hi Thanks a lot for the help.

I ran discovery and it shows the homeserver name, but it still wont let me connect after i put the password in. Get "Unable to connect to your home server" message.

I also ran the Windows Home Server Toolkit connector troubleshooter and I get several errors:

  • Rodney,

There is certainly something wrong with your IPs, from that printout all your computers appear to have the same IP address of 192.168.2.2, even though you appear to have DHCP enabled!

How did you set them up, as something as gone wrong, whether it's your router, or how you set your clients.

In an ideal scenario, you need the server to either have a fixed IP, or a reserved IP, preferably the second if your router supports it, with your clients being allocated an address from the same pool.

Have a read through it's manual, and see what it says.

  • Hi,

I'm not a networking expert, but I thought you might like to know that I'm using a Belkin N1 Vision with two Vista computers and a Home Server and have no problems. There's nothing special about my Belkin settings, the only things that I have changed from the defaults are to add the WHS ports for remote access, enable wireless security, and set WAN connection type to dynamic (I have an ADSL modem set to PPPoA "extended mode", which passes the WAN IP to the router). The router is thus the DHCP server and NAT device.

Do your computer names show up correctly on the Belkins dinky little screen on the connections page?

  • Hi,

Thanks for the input. I have changed the router before with no issues at all. This is the first router that has caused problems. Nothing special about my Belkin settings either other then my internet is cable. Haven't set up the remote access yet.

I actually dont consistently see all the computers on the belkin connections page.

There is something wrong with DHCP as I cannot ping computers by name, only ip address and its inconsistent.

At least I can remote desktop to the server. I may end up trying a different router, not sure what else to do.

Windows systems are very frustrating I find. I use Macs at home and never have any of this networking issues. Although I know it may be the router.

  • There are alot of reports on this Belkin model, some of which say it has a problem when near other 2.4 ghz devices, others say there is a firmware patch. The reviews also say it has no 5ghz capabilities. I would try to see if the patch can be found.
