Validated Office Enterprise 2007 but can't download templates "Error...not genuine" RRS feed

  • Question

  • I installed Microsoft Office Enterprise 2007 over a year ago on a laptop running Vista Home Premium. When I run Office Genuine Advantage Validation, Explorer tells me "Validation Successful" yet I cannot download any templates from the "New..." dialog box inside any of the programs. I can, however, download the same templates from microsoft.com and manually install them without issues. I've tried all the other fixes I can find on this forum with no results. This is a recent development, yet I have not made any significant changes to my hardware or software system since the last successful download.

MGA Diagnostic results posted below. Please note, I do have Mozilla Firefox 3.0 installed and am aware of the issues with MGA, so I switched my default browser back to Explorer.

    Thanks,
    Melissa

  • AxisGrid,

In your Diagnostic Report, you will notice that under the "File Scan Data-->" line there are a large number of files that are listed as "Mismatched". All those files are Critical Vista System files. Normally, when there is one or two Mismatched files, it means that those files have been tampered or have become corrupted in some way. But in your case the Diagnostic Report is reporting that ALL your Critical Vista System files are Tampered or Corrupted. This is highly unlikely. What is more likely is that your System Catalog has been tampered or corrupted. The System Catalog stores all the Signatures Hashs (think fingerprints) for all the Critical Vista System files. One of the things that Vista uses the System Catalog for is to identify if a file has been tampered or corrupted because if the file had been modified, it's signature hash would not match what is listed in the System Catalog and in which case, Vista would flag itself as Non-Genuine (as it has done, in your case).

I highly recommend that you Repair Windows using System Restore:

    1. Reboot Vista into Safe Mode
    2. Go to Control Panel
    3. On the left hand side of the Control panel window, Click on "Classic View"
    4. Double-click "Backup and Restore Center"
    5. On the left hand side of the window, click "Repair Windows using System Restore"
    6. Put a check in the box that says "Show restore points older than 5 days",

    7. Select "Choose Different Restore Point", select the restore point that corresponds to a date Before you first experienced the issue.
    8. Click the "Next" button.
    9. Reboot back into Normal mode
    10. Run the Diagnostic Tool again and paste the results into NotePad or Word doc and scroll down to the "File Scan Data-->" line.

11a)     If there are any Mismatched files listed, they you will need to restore to a point further in the past.
11b)     If there are No Mismatched files listed, then your Vista should report as Genuine.

If the above steps do not resolve your issue, your other options are to either reinstall Vista or contact Vitsa support at http://support.microsoft.com for additional support options.

  • Ah. That would make sense. I was infected with a nasty trojan a few weeks ago (that is, my laptop was infected; not me!) and it scrambled some of my files. Looks like I'm in for hours of reinstalling software, but I guess that's what I get for installing Freeware.

    Thanks for your help Rick!

  • AxisGrid,

Not a problem. It would be a good idea to Backup all your personal files to removable media. Which can be scanned on your new machine for viruses before restoring them on to your restored desktop. Also, make sure to locate all your programs you did pay for. Microsoft products on your machine usually require Product Keys. Make sure you have those on-hand as well. Make note of personal settings. If you need to capture a window screen shot and then copy and paste them into a word doc to print so you have those on hand, window screen shots can be done by pressing Alt and the PrintScreen button at the same time in the window you want to copy. Then go to MS Word if you have it, and press Cntrl V to paste your pic into the doc. Then you can print it out to have on hand. Make note of Hardware devices and the drivers needed to run them as well.

Personally, I stay away from toolbars, 3rd party browsers, and any sort of free software. This is my personal view. After I restore a machine, I remove excess pre-installed programs that I know I don't need and pre-installed trial programs before installing my paid for programs, to overt multiple programs of the same nature being on my machine at the same time too.

I hope this helps  you a little. Most of this is my personal view, not the view of a company.

So on that note I sign off with,

    Best Wishes,

    Rick
