  • Hello guys,

I was just wondering why isn't it possible to send a private mail to the forum user - through forum of course, without disclosing the address.
I think it might be helpful when a person doesn't want to post his/her code but trusts a certain user - cause it's a moderator, or they have a history, or any other reason.

    Regards,
    Vladimir.

  • Talking about Private Mail as in PM, I manage another forum (boats) but it adds overhead to a busy forum (storage especially) even if you limit number of messages the inbox can hold as users tend not to delete the contents of their inbox. Moderators are likely to be asked questions that should be asked in the forums. So there are pro's and con's to it

  • as long as by default its off, its additional overhead to the forums which already has problems that need worked out. So I say NO to PM's but I would love a report a problem as not everyone knows the report abuse serves the same function (maybe change the wording to report problem with post). But PM here, nope don't see the need for it.

    hi ,

agree with that , and you ould have to write in for that , you can also include it only if you have made lets say 10 posts so they know they user is active account wise

yes report as abuse should also say , report technical error , ....

bigger avatar might be nice also , in fact all of the options like in vb bulletin or so would be nice and would fast forward the site as a whole

and one thing , after lets say 25 posts there should be a second page on auto , now it takes in some threads to long to go to the last post , ... a page count on the top and bottom would be nice

an other nice ddition would be to see who is online , if the user wants it , maybe even include the messenger option ?

and a bit of color would be nice and on the site or top or bottom publicity regarding new microsoft programs , software , etc , they have it on all sites except this one

last but not least included an option that would get rid of those points and just put the number of posts under the avatar , keep the medals or stars and include under the avatar also the option to write where ya from , language you speak and lets say the date you joined , thats about it i think , ....

    have a nice day

  • I would not support PM or any such facility.
What this would do is reduce the number of posts for all to see.
Most people will try to send the mail to moderators and I guess they will have real tough time.

Even if this is implemented would these conversations be recorded so that others can search them based on some tags later?
    Hope this helps !!

  • Hi,

regarding PM, it would be up to community members to respect the forum rules and guidelines not to abuse PM.
The number of posts for all to see would not reduce, since the PM should be used to send code that users can not or would not like to expose to public.
Moderators are leaving their addresses on the thread anyway when they can not help without reproducing the bug.
The conversation itself should continue on the original thread, and that is something that's controlled by moderators or who ever is accepting the mail. It's up to him to post his suggestions and answers on the thread instead of replying on the mail.

Of course there is always a possibility of abuse and misbehavior by forum users.
But most of the time it's easier to post code sample or upload test project so anyone can help you instead of restricting yourself to one person.

Having said that, it would be nice to have the ability to upload files instead of using some external service.
But I guess that would be another hit on the performance / storage.

So, I still think PM is a nice feature to have, but if I'd have to choose between performance and any fancy (non essential) feature, I'd always choose performance.

@Darbur972: I like your suggestions, especially about seeing who is online and the option to put some personal information under the avatar.

    Best regards,
    Vladimir

    hi ,

not at all , on the contrary , i remember when this option came with apolyton , from then on the site run better , and people got more involved

you can pm a friend , take a look at this thread , hey whats your email , hey next week its the birthday of so and so , wow have you seen this program ?

lets make a thread regarding this or that and you do the pics i do the text , and plenty more examples , ...

its about time this fora gets fast forwarded to the 21 century , ... !!

why make the PM public ? i can imagine some people want to keep stuff private , ....

and of course you would have the choice to use the pm or not , ...

as for mods causing getting extra work , no that does not happen , it might at the start but it drops after that , seen it on many sites .and the mods will get to love it , they can work better , coordinate better , you can as a user pm a mod , hey this thread , can you move it to this place ? can you merge this with that ?

only benefits from a PM , and there could be a chat also

    have a nice day

    hi ,

birthdays would be a nice add on also

there could a page where the people who posted today would be shown and maybe the new members who have done like ten posts , those would be the people who stay

facebook , twitter , etc should also be included , and aim , live messenger , all ofcourse if the user wants them in short , all that a normal fora has these days , ...

as for abuse i dont think anyone will be stupid enough to use a pm for not so nice things , since a pm can be forwarded at ones to a mod or owner , ...

as for the upload files , yes why not , lets say a picture , or a zip file , or a simple download program . lets say with a max of 5 mb to start with or a pic with max 2 mb

the biggest problem will be the forum engine , i think an entire new one will be needed , and microsoft needs to upgrade the servers . i would also make sure there are several servers in other countries , countries with loads of users around would get its own server , all should be in synchro with each other so a user in japan for example would be able to post just as fast and see what a user in france has posted , ...

the investment will be payed back by itself in two ways , the first would the pub you see now on the microsoft sites , that small window on the left , all microsoft products a lot of people do not know about , the second would be the help capability for all the products , at the same time the newsgroups would stop and be merged with this fora , that means more staff that comes free to work on the expanding fora here (!) also the servers and other hardware , and last but not least a section regarding off topic shouldbe made ,
most people stay with one or two fora . in the ot topic for example they could make publicity about microsoft games , ....

the options and the advance could be great and will benefit everyone , from the users to the mods and owners , ....

and there could be help mods , just to move the threads or the posts , to close older threads that are no longer needed , to organise the entire forum or a section or part

now all that is needed is the courage to change , only a few have the power to do it , ...

    have a nice day

  • Birthdays are useless, I don't ever offer my true birthday. I manage another forum and I've limited the use of it as its too prone to abuse and users won't pose their questions in the forums for fear of looking stupid and it has quickly filled up our inboxes when they should be posing their questions where hundreds/thousands of others can help with their knowledge and experience. I even turned off the email feature within the forum and like here, I delete the email addresses and caution users against exposing their email in public. We tell them the only question that is stupid, is the one they don't ask and I make sure NO member ever disrespect another (good thing I'm not a moderator in some of the forums here for I'd be banning the smart mouth punks that seem to flourish at times disrepecting the mods here) ;)

You guys might like all that junk, all I see is more stuff to slow down the forums even more than necessary
