Server Configuration: Install CRM for demo purposes

Question
-
Hi,
I am trying to install Dynamics CRM 4.0 on a 2008 Server SP2 virtual machine with SQL Server 2008 for the purpose of becoming familiar with CRM and hopefully being able to create a demo of it interfacing with SharePoint and Reporting Services. I do not have the virtual machine set up as a domain controller. I was running into a problem with the install asking for Active Directory. What roles on the server are required for an installation of this type?
I am not a server configuration expert. I hope that someone has an easy installation instructional for this.Sunday, October 25, 2009 6:16 PM

Hi Jerry,
The server you install on has to be a member of an active directory domain OR could also be a domain controller. In your case I'd recommend making your virtual server also a domain controler (run dcpromo.exe from a command line and follow wizard...) if it is not a member of one.

Hi
If you're not an expert I would like to suggest preconfigured Microsoft Virtual Machine which comes with a lot of additional things like accelerators, Communicator Server ...
This VM is excellent for demo purposes. I need only create a new organization in CRM and you have vanilla system + you have Sharepoint + Performance Point Server

This is one option, but I think I want everything to be mine because I have the licenses.- Proposed as answer by Curt Spanburgh MVP ModeratorMVP, Moderator Monday, October 26, 2009 3:40 AM

Hey Alex,
I am getting information from others that Server 2008 can not be the domain controller and have CRM 4.0 installed.
According to this is has to be small business server

Does this make any sense?Monday, October 26, 2009 4:38 PM -
Interesting. I have this same 'non supported' configuration in a test virtual server and works ok. I do have win 2008 R2 and not win 2008.

Thanks Alex. I assume you are running a x86 version of 2008 server. I have not yet found a x64 Virtual solution which will run on my Windows 7 OS.Wednesday, October 28, 2009 4:01 PM

Found the Virtual solution. VMWare 7 Workstation is SWEET! Well worth the $180.00Sunday, November 1, 2009 5:02 AM
