Vista Enterprise broken validation

    Question

  • Hello!

Hoping someone can help. The hard drive in my work laptop started acting up, so I backed everything up and restored it to a new drive. Along the way something got messed up, because Windows is no longer activated. (Everything else is working fine.) The help desk wants to reimage to fix it, which is the last thing I want. So I'm hoping someone can help. Thanks so much!

  • Hello again.

So I worked with the help desk some more today and found out that this machine uses a token activation. After doing the steps you gave me and some others I found on this forum (deleting tokens.dat), we were able to get Vista to accept the token activation.

At this point everything seems back to normal except that it still says Vista isn't activated on the bottom right-hand corner of the desktop. (Control panel and slmgr say otherwise.)

Here's my new output. Does it look okay?

You have a Trusted Store Tamper
Your problem is the result of a Trusted Store Tamper – which is a relatively rare problem in Vista.
They are often caused by malware of one kind or another, so first we have to make sure that the system is clean.
Download MalwareBytes Anti-Malware from www.malwabytes.org and install it – update it but do NOT accept the offer to run the trial Real-Time protection (it can conflict with other stuff in Vista). The run a Full system scan in you main account, and quick scans in any other user accounts.
    Delete everything it finds.
Then check the system for hard drive problems or file problems, with CHKDSK and SFC....

    type in the Search box
    CMD.EXE
right-click on the only file that is found
    Select Run as Administrator
    - the Elevated Command Prompt window should pop up
    At the Command prompt, type
    CHKDSK C: /R
    and hit the Enter key
You will be told that the drive is locked, and the CHKDSK will run at he next boot - hit the Y key, and then reboot. The chkdsk will take a few hours depending on the size of the drive, so be patient!

After the CHKDSK has run, Windows should boot normally (possibly after a second auto-reboot) - then run the SFC

SFC -System File Checker - Instructions
    Click on the Start button
    type in the Search box
    CMD.EXE
right-click on the only file that is found
    Select Run as Administrator
    - the Elevated Command Prompt window should pop up
    At the Command prompt, type

    SFC /SCANNOW

    and hit the Enter key
Wait for the scan to finish - make a note of any error messages - and then reboot.

run another MGADiag report, and post the results

  • Hello again.

So I worked with the help desk some more today and found out that this machine uses a token activation. After doing the steps you gave me and some others I found on this forum (deleting tokens.dat), we were able to get Vista to accept the token activation.

At this point everything seems back to normal except that it still says Vista isn't activated on the bottom right-hand corner of the desktop. (Control panel and slmgr say otherwise.)

Here's my new output. Does it look okay?

    Hello again.

As far as I can tell, there’s now no problem with the activation or validation – you might like to confirm that at www.microsoft.com/genuine/validate (but I’m not totally sure what to expect – we don’t often deal with KMS and Tokens here!)
You may find that anther reboot or two will clear the notification.
