Changing license from PC to Mac RRS feed

  • Question

  • I bought a PC less than 1 week ago and also bought the Microsoft HOme and Student 2010 and downloaded it onto my computer.  I'm having so many problems with the computer (not Microsoft) that I want to take it back and get a Mac.  Can I transfer my license to a MAC?  If instead, I just get another PC, what do I need to do to download  software to my new computer?  Thanks for your help.  KarenG

  • Hello Nerak99,

As far as I know, at the moment Office Home and Student 2010 is only legitimately available to regular individual consumers as a direct downloadable purchase from two online sources, the Microsoft Store (http://store.microsoft.com) and Dell's website.

Here is the return policy for the Microsoft Store:  http://store.microsoft.com/Help/Returns-Refunds  As I read it, you can call the toll free number to "return" your downloaded software for a refund, whereupon they will block the product key from further use.

If you purchased from the Dell online store, you'd have to contact their customer service reps to learn the details regarding returns.

If you purchased a downloadable copy of Office H&S 2010 from any other source, it is likely a pirated and/or countereit product.

The Good News about wanting to buy a copy of Office for a Mac is that Microsoft will be releasing the latest edition of Office for Macs in October, so if you buy a copy of Office 2008 for Mac now, Microsoft will give you a free copy of Office 2011 for Mac when it's released next month under the Tech Guarantee program:  http://www.microsoft.com/presspass/press/2010/aug10/08-02msmacofficepr.mspx

If you decide to buy a different PC rather than the Mac, then just uninstall your Office from the new PC that's not working so well before you return it to the store or to the manufacturer.  When you buy the replacement for the one that's not working well, just install Office onto that one normally.
