trade XP for pro, or pro for XP??? RRS feed

  • Question

  • The past few days I been cleaning up a old Dell Dimension for some freinds. It had like 84 trojans, and enough spyware to sink a ship. After finally getting this thing in working order I tried to update windows. For some reason it has XP Pro installed, but the product key affixed to the chassis is for regular old XP. So, of coarse, no updates.

The XP Pro key seems to be a blocked volume license key.

Is there some way I can downgrade the Pro instalation to make the product key sticker on the chassis work, or peel off the sticker and mail it in for an upgraded Pro key?

There is no way in  I am going to reinstall windows on this machine after all the work I put into it. They do not have any original install disks for this computer, or the Pro disks, or windows instalation from a secure section of the hard. drive.

I will be going back freinds house in a few days to finish fixing the thing.

  • DDWibb,

The right way to fix the situation is to order a replacement XP Home Ed Dell OS Reinstallation CD from Dell for about $15.

Back up their data, and do a clean installation of XP using the CD.

BTW, that would have been much faster than battling 84 trojans and a ship full of spyware.

  • Thank you for all the responses,

Normally I would have taken the computer home, and backed up, but this was not possible in this situation. I'm sure you don't want to hear a re-telling of the great adventure, of how one man spent an extended weeked in the Bershires with a computer that had not worked in over 6 months.

I will try the windows product key update tool.

  • Contact Dell support and request a Dell Windows XP Reinstallation CD.  A "volume license with a blocked product key" indicates the CD used is counterfeit and non-genuine.

  • The Key Update Tool worked!

I was able to download Windows updates immediatly after. My freinds are thrilled that the computer is up and running again.

    Thanks
